I need to ditch the factory Gen 1 fuel head and was planning on just using the factory gen 2 head.
I have heard of a few other options but I am not sure what all the hype is about, should I get the gen 2 or aftermarket?

Thanks.

I'm perfectly happy with my 2n gen OEM. Other options included the Racor (viewtopic.php?f=98&t=36977) and Stanadyne (viewtopic.php?f=98&t=69556). Folks going with those options seem to like the finer filter than the stock filter (2 micron vs. 10 micron). Not to kick start another debate on the topic I personally don't know that the finer filter provides a significant benefit. That said I do know that I would not install a 2 micron filter as my "1st" filter in the system. If I was to install a 2 micron filter it would be as a secondary unit between the OEM filter and the CP3 to avoid premature clogging of the finer filter with "bigger" stuff that the 10 micron unit will catch.

Cummins had a white paper a while back that showed increased injector wear at 6-7 micron particles on high pressure systems
the Racor/Stanadyne 2-3 micron filters eliminate that.

Now whether - they clog up more due to the filter size - is a good bet - but not documented yet.

the 10 micron or so pre-filter would be a good idea.

I went with a Stanadyne FM100 and like it a lot. 2 micron with a Cummins intake pump pushing fuel to it.

The stock 10 micron filter uses paper media and the water that is ever present in our US fuel degrades the paper and long term testing showed the 10 micron OEM filter was only 40% effecient as it got old. Old Navy, a moderator here did the testing years ago.

The 2 microm filters use a synthetic media that does not degrade.

I still have the stock OEM filter and gen 1 head but the fuel then goes through a CAT 2 micron filter before going to the pump.
If it cloggs from dirt so be it, the problem is the dirt and not the filter :goink:

Warp2Diesel has designed a couple of adapters for the stock fuel head that allows the Racor 2 micron filter with the clear bowl on the bottom to fit our filter heads. I'll be making one in May when my extended warranty runs out :seuss:
Yes a Cummins pump pushing the fuel all the way from the tank into the CP3 is a fantastic idea

I ordered the gen2 OEM fuel head seeing as I don't have the time to deal with the aftermarket install right now and the cold weather is on its way here in MI.
I would like to know more about the adapters for the 2 micron filters! 2 microns is super small, do these filters restrict flow?

I'll leave those with 2 micron filters to comment but IMHO the answer would be no they don't unless you get dirty fuel.

I haven't had an issue with the Racor - but I haven't had it long - mainly around town.

and I also have the in-tank pump pushing.

If I go for extended trips the pre-filter's a good idea

RetMil used to have lots of issues with fuel and even a large size pre-filter prevented problems

Another option to consider is forum member gmctd's top load Cummins fuel head:

What I did and it works great. Sorry, I don't have time to make up any kits.

That's some nice work on that adapter, how has it been working not loosening up at all? I like this idea, you can go right back to the (crappy made in china) factory filter if needed!

Now I just don't like the end of you post about no time!

I thought the OEM filter is 3 microns?

It says in the service manual:
Quote:
The fuel filter has a 3 micron element and tightens clockwise to the housing.

Yes the service manual says 3 micron.

The OEM filter does not make any size claim.

WIX - the company whose existence depends on being better than or equal to stock says their replacement is 10 micron.

The one data point we have of someone pulling a sample and measuring it - indicates a 10 micron paper filter that disintegrates on contact with water....

note - these are all on the 2.8L - if you have the European 2.5L - the Racor 2 micron is a direct match for that setup.

It was mention in the past that maybe 3 micron is what Bosch recommends :JEEPIN:
