Can anyone give me the link for the info on swapping the stock (F-37) TCM with the 5.7L RAM TCM?

Thanks,

I don't offhand have the link but your best bet may be to PM/email warp2diesel who is running that TCM

You should be able to find a thread on it.

You can get the serial # from that thread. The units are available on ebay for short money.

Be aware that the F-37 TC and in particular the transmission pump check valve cannot handle towing with that unit.

I put the Dodge TCM in and also changed out the TC for a suncoast unit and had the transgo shift kit installed.

Using the Dodge TCM is a very different style of driving, if you are used driving and shifting using rpm's to shift up or down you'll find the Dodge TCM much more favorable.

4th gear shift and lockup is around 43 mpg , 5th gear lockup is at 47 mph. I can be in 5th gear running 1300 rpm.

Be also aware you can force a downshift to 3rd and over rev the engine to the rev limiter shutdown at 4500, Warp states and I agree, stay under 3800 rpm, you have to be careful it's easy to do unless you watch your pedal foot.

Not sure if this is correct but from what I heard, if your CRD is equipped with the segar modification the rev limiter will not activate.

Someone with a segar modifaction may want to comment on that.

Turbo Tim is the Creator of the SEGR and UFO has built a bunch of them.
Mine is almost ready to go in, but with under 850 miles to 100,000, the Timing Belt is a higher priority coming up.
The tune does determine the max RPM, since my SEGR is still waiting, I do not know for sure if it effects the max RPM. I would bet that a VM engineer would know the Valve Float RPM of the 2.8L where the valves crash into the pistons. Most companies keep the red line well below that RPM.
If I had to guess on the 2.8L VM Valve Float RPM with a Loaded Gun to my head, I would guess the Valve Float Point is ~5,500 to 6,000 RPMs, but a VM Engineer or Dyno Tech would know for sure, I am just guessing for discussion purposes.

The reason for trying to not go over 3800 RPM is because the torque drops off as the cylinder head valves reach their maximum flow rate and HP takes hard a dive. When you approach the 4000 RPM Red Line or go as high as 4500, you are pumping air, wasting fuel, and not getting the acceleration thrust or towing power you want.

The RAM TCM is a trick to get some of the benefits of a manual trans that you can control the shift with your right foot. Those of us Gear Heads over 55, we remember the old kick down linkage attached to the Carburetor shaft going down to the Automatic Transmission. We would play with the adjustment and bend as needed to make it act like the Ram TCM does. For Dodge to get the fuel economy out of the Ram 1500 5.7, the revived the old gear head trick of adjusting and bending the old kick down linkage using TCM logic and incorporated it into the Ram TCM.
As you boost train the RAM TCM so it does not down shift on you, you can get the in manifold boost up to as high as 20PSI with out forcing a down shift and rev up. Just adjust the accelerator to 3800 RPM to do a hard acceleration. After a while, you can very quickly speed shift the trans where you want by doing a very quick and slight foot lift, just a little.
When you see the gasser behind you as long as it does not have flashing lights on its' roof. You can :ROTFL: :ROTFL: :ROTFL: with out getting out of your seat.

Thank you all for the input here on the TCM swap. This would be a great mod for me, but not the wife..... I've just gotta figure out a way to keep her out of MY Jeep !!!

Thanks again,

Take her for a ride after the TCM is trained.
If we only have my CRD and my wife needs to use it to go on a very short trip like a local grocery store. I tell her do not floor it, just crack the peddle. She still has not figured out all I have done to my CRD.
OH, be carefull you don't knock out the harness plugs on the right fender when you swap the TCM. My AC quit working and all it was, was a harness plug I bumped and slightly unplugged. To play it safe, press all three of the near by harness plugs together after doing the swap, just to play it safe.

My machine does shut down at 4500, I'm still learning to drive with the Dodge TCM, it's a great mod, every time warp writes about it, I get more info, we should drive out there ply more info out of him.
Or he can always come fishing here.

I am in San Jose, CA the next two weeks (I fly there, I am not that NUTS), long way from MA.
Checked with a Gent who has an SEGR installed, it does not effect the REV Limiter.
What ever Rev limit you have is in your tune, stock is 4300 RPM.

I am hoping to get a few fishing trips in before the weather shuts me down for good.
Not a happy time other than have a CRD that can actually haul stuff without major concern of drive train issues. The turbo is another issue.

What no Ice Hut with a Satellite dish on the roof?
I guess Salt Water does not freeze as well like the Fresh Water in MN. :ROTFL:

Most diesel engines can rev quite a bit higher than what the "Red Line" is. The reason they don't is because of the burn speed of the fuel.
The SEGR has nothing to do with the rpm limit of the engine. All the SEGR does is fake out the computer that the EGR is working fine. EGR's don't have anything to do with the rpm limit of the engine.
Mine is still working fine after 100K miles of Phoenix heat / driving. Egr has not opened once during this time. No CEL's, no black junk inside manifolds. Nice.

Bumping this thread.

I put my ram tcm in Saturday. So far I really like it. I've never had a heavy foot so I think this is right up my alley.

Thanks warp for the teaching steps. Starting out, I had to get it to about 2500 rpm and then completely let of the pedal for it to shift. It is gradually getting better. I think my jeep is a good student or I'm a good coach. This morning I only had to feather off the pedal and it shifted right around 2000 rpm every time. Cruising speeds at 50 before my boost gauge would read 4. Now it goes back in forth from 2-3. So just from that I would think I'm getting better mileage.

Teaching it makes me want a manual crd

The weak point of the Manual CRD is the Dual Mass Grenade Flywheel that explodes with even the power levels of a stock tune. Immagine how far the grenade fragments would fly with a Performance tune.
Just stick with the Ram TCM that makes the 545RFE shift like a manual.

Great mod, with the right Torque Converter and beefier shift kit. Still think I need a new pump though

I'm reviving this thread. Just wondering what years of Rams your using? 04-07 or something?
