Alright guys, been lurking on here a lot recently. Since my last post, I bought a different jeep since parts were so darn expensive! Anywho, the jeep I have now is a 2006 CRD with 97XXX on the odo. When I bought it the jeep already had an edge chip AND a striker box by painless performance. The striker is a plug and forget while the edge has a three position switch in the cab. While driving the switch stays in the lowest setting, and when I go to pass someone and I have to do it quickly I'll flip the switch to the top real quick for some extra power then flip it back down.

I've been driving it for about a week and a half without issue until yesterday morning I noticed a bit more smoke than normal. The first thing I did was check for codes and aside from the MAF code (ORM) there was nothing. This morning there is a considerable loss of power and lots of smoke, yet there are still no codes being thrown? I have a cheap actron auto scanner and strangely it was having troubles connecting to the ECM after awhile. Since I'm pretty new to these things I figured I'd start here first. Thanks for the help!

If you bought a CRD because parts were expensive on your last Jeep, boy do you have a surprise coming..

That being said, first you should probably check your intercooler hoses, the short intercooler "fresh air" hose running down from the back of the air filter box to the intake on the turbo for cracks and holes. The "fresh air" hose is known to fail at the bottom where it bolts onto the turbo and if these hoses have holes and fail they're known to create more smoke and shortly after a loss of power.

Also your EGR/FCV valve could be going, but if you're not getting a code for either it's doubtful that's what's causing the smoke.

Start with those hoses.

Also, are you talking about the hose that runs from the lid to the Turbo? I checked the Turbo to intercooler hose and it looked fine, just oily as all hell inside. I meant to check the airbox to Turbo hose but it was giving me hell and I ran out of time.

If you have an Edge and a Striker - you're getting ready to blow the injector pump.
they both fake out the sensor and drive it to over pressure.


lots of smoke - no power - is the classic symptom of a blown turbo hose - sometime the split is large and obvious - sometimes it's small and hard to find.
best way to to pull them and inspect the entire length (Sir Sam created some plug to pressurize the hose)

there should be a noise

As mentioned, definitely check the hoses for boost leaks and I'd add to that checking the intercooler for physical damage as well (though I assume you'd notice if you hit something big enough to punch a hole into your intercooler).

On top of that, pull out your MAP sensor and clean it if you haven't recently or if it hasn't been cleaned that you know of.

I had a very similar issue, you might say it was identical, but only temporary.

I was driving down the road, almost all power was gone, black smoke. I pulled off the road, shut down the engine and took a look under the hood. After finding out nothing and seeing no visible damage to the hoses, etc I decided to restart the engine and see if the check engine light was on. I restarted and there was no light and everything ran perfect. I drove it home with no issues...until a few days later. It had the same issue...lost nearly all power and black smoke. I shut down and restarted and all was well.

After that I cleaned my MAP sensor and didn't have another issue with it.

I sincerely hope that is all that is wrong with your vehicle. :) But if not, this forum is a great place to dig for answers with many knowledgeable people on it.

Also, one more thing. When cleaning the MAP sensor be extremely careful to not drop the mount screw into the intake manifold as its extremely hard to get back out. :P
