It appears that there is some rubbing between the inside joint of the passenger half shaft and the frame that holds the diff. I noticed this issue when I was installing the skid plate and changing the gear oil in the front differential. Recently when putting in Full time and part time, I have head some humming or gear noise at highway speeds, but only under acceleration. I would assume that this is the problem. For a bonus, I have included a poor quality video to show how the inner joint can move about.

Later this week I plan to take it apart an take a look in there. Any suggestions on what I should check?

That would most likely be a worn intermediate shaft.Time for a new CV axle(remaned only,do not buy those labeled "new") and intermediate shaft.

I have the same humming sound but its when I am over about 40 mph. I also notice that when I turn to the left the hum goes away. Do you have the same problem?

For me it is much more noticeable above 40 and especially during acceleration, but only when I am in part-time or full-time. It does not seem to make a difference when I am turning though.

I have been reading about how to fix this, I think I will be able to do it, but the only "special" tool is a 34mm socket. Are there any other tools needed that are out of the ordinary?

I finally got all my parts in and was able to make the repair. It went very well following the factory service manual. The only issue I had was getting the lower control arm off of the lower ball joint. I tried a number of things, but what word was taping a wedge shaped object between the lower control arm and the front knuckle. (the red line)

The intermediate shaft I ordered already had the clips on the shaft so I did need the ones I ordered separately. Anyone need them? :D

Where I bought the shaft:http://www.amazon.com/Omix-Ada-16523-43-Axle-Shaft/dp/B0034KU8OQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327449580&sr=8-1

The half shaft I bought at Napa was good except the inboard boot had a lot of air in it. I removed the clip and removed a the excess air and the boot fit much better.

I replaced the intermediate shaft (which included snap rings) and the passenger CV shaft. I replaced both parts at the same time and it worked great.
