 Post subject: 2006 CRD Likely blown head gasket. Comments wanted.

My CRD at 60mph with 98K lost power so I shut it off thinking it was the turbo as the boost psi was erratic between 0 and 20. By the time pulled over and stopped <20 sec the low coolant alarm was on. When I checked the oil it was way over full so that is where the coolant went. I towed it home and drained the oil, coolant and filter. Refilled it with new oil and filter. Pulled the injectors so it could let it cycle the new oil without a load. It built pressure normally so I hope the bottom end is fine the compression sounded weak and only normal on one cylinder. I plugged the injectors in and cranked it. It did not start and smoke/pressure came out the oil fill. To me it seems likely the head gasket is blown. Not sure why besides the age driving it hard and GDE hot tune. I am going to tear it down in a week or two when I have vacation. I changed the timing belt about 3 k ago. Are there any other tests I should perform while it is assembled? I know about the 3 sizes of head gaskets. What other than the gaskets and head bolts am I likely to need for sure? The only codes were a low fuel rail pressure and fuel leak large. May be a bad injector caused it may be because there is no compression. The glow plugs will be replaced while the head is off.

Good luck. Make sure to have the head checked, could be warped and need replacement. If you ae lucky it is only a gasket and everything else is OK. Good you can do the work yourself, dealers charge a fourtune.

Got the valve cover off. So far found #3 glow plug tip gone. #3 injector tip bent from a object of similar shape to the glow plug tip. 1 #3 exhaust valve stretched/broken unknown. Probably pull the head later tonight.

Pulled head. Need a long block. #3 cylinder exhaust valves broken off and crunched in piston. Punched a hole in the head in the water jacket. I will take pictures and look at it better tomorrow.

Glow plug tip was where it should be. Not sure what happened unless it just decided to drop a valve. #3 sleeve is in bad shape.

You could replace the piston and liner in just that cylinder. Fix or replace head. :pepper:

On the 2.8 long block is there any major reason a 2011 block head and intake wont fit. Looks identical so far.

Exhaust manifold, turbo and whatever needed will be swapped over.

Going to look at a new 2011 2.8 engine Saturday locally to see it can be made to work.

the newer engines have a different injection system (and who would have one???)

PM MrMopar64 or Green Diesel Engineering to see how many parts will match.

This is sitting in dallas. Theft recovery 9k miles. 2010 block not sure what from.

There is also a 05 engine with 75k in houston for bit less.

Not sure I want to risk the 10 engine working

Agree with the comments above. Just put in a rebuild kit (new liners, etc) and the block will be fine. Talk to George at VM UK for the head, I think they can supply them complete.

I think you have to have a European computer - to get the 10 to work (might be do-able - but you're on uncharted ground)

the 05 is probably a bolt in.

the 'rebuild kit' would be great if you could get one (and a shop that knows what to do with it)

that 10k engine is not from a KJ, maybe a KK? thermostat housing doesn't look right for a KK, JK? RS?

longblock might be the same, but there are a bunch of things that need to be pulled off of it and off of yours if it were to work.

That is not a 2010 engine. It was built between 2002-2004 and is not worth your time due to different injection system.

It seems to be from the Ford Explorer...never made it to production. The RT has different turbo piping. The Explorer engine is very similar to the older KJ engine, with a few minor changes.

Yes it reminds me of my 2.5 CRD. The ford part makes sense.....that look like the ford style oil filler neck.

Too bad the explorer never made it to production with that.

Having a problem with the flex-plate bolts to the hub. What direction thread are they? My impact has broken 3 T50 impact sockets but with no movement either way. I remember some people have had to cut the heads off. Any suggestions?
Picked up 30K mile engine asssembly for now to get it on the road while I slowly rebuild the other and need to swap the flex-plate and engine adapter.

Dieseltoys.com is based out of Texas and they have done a few conversions with the newer engines maybe you can check them out.
