Hello, Jeepers. I'm always under the hood looking for a better design to help us all out. What's the deal with that plastic, oval intake scoop behind, to the side of the passenger headlight? (Better seen with grille off) I don't understand how air can even be coming in at a good rate through there. Any thoughts on improving this, or can someone clarify that this design is just fine?

Your stock airbox outflows what the 3.7 can handle for air.You would be amazed at how much air is pushed through that opening when you above say 40mph.

Thanks, tj. I also have a cold air intake... It just seems like the grille is completely blocking the airflow that I might be able to benefit from. Just trying to improve the engine efficiency if possible. I'm probably on the road to a bored out throttle body in the future to fulfill my needs.

:seuss: You know it. I know a Jeep isn't known for great m.p.g., but if it'll help, I'll eventually do it.

The whole idea for that placement is to get cooler outside air as opposed to the hot air under the hood. Ram air effect would be nice but it is more than the engine can handle anyways. The other important function is that the cold air intake be behind that plate in the grill to shield it from water ingestion during rain or water crossings.

I agree, but that slot of the grille is a solid piece and not open. Seems like they were doing some overkill protecting the engine.

Toss that K&N CAI in the trash and put your stock box back in and you'll have better results
Proven fact that CAIs don't work well on these engines
All they do is make more of a loud sucking sound to make you think you're getting more power

I put a K&N drop in filter in mine. I've read that the oil will trash the maf sensor but I haven't seen any evidence of oil leaving the filter at all. Don't use the squirt on filter oil if you go that way, it's too hard to control. Use the spray oil and only use enough to moisten the filter, not soak it. Be sure to let it dry too. :2cents:

I ran a K&N back in early 05, tested it for about 15,000 miles
after cleaning everything of dirt and grime in the intake and installing the stock box and paper filter got better mileage, ran smoother, Oh and the hose up to the grill.
Funny Jeep did that to the KKs
Yes knew how to clean and oil them, ran them on the Harleys and 4 or 5 other vehicles
Never again after reading a lot of info since then

What did ya read? I've been giving mine a wipe inside the tube every now and then, I haven't seen any evidence of oil residue or dirt. I do know that they sell the filter oil in a squirt bottle as well as an aerosol can. I can see how some people could over oil the filter and cause problems but I don't see a real problem with it. It provides decent filtration and higher flow than most pleated paper filters. I don't see how it could effect mileage though, unless the higher air flow allowed more fuel air mixture somehow. It's just a filter. We've been using washable air filters in the HVAC trade for decades. While they sometimes provide more airflow, they significantly reduce the expense of disposible filters. If I could find one for the cabin air I'd consider that one too. I am curious to see the negative info though, there may be something to it besides over oiling. :seuss:

The one time I tried the oiled air filter, it started coating the inner walls of the air intake and the IAT sensor with a fine brown film of oil mixed with fine talc like dust that is not filtered out by the "performance" filter until it gets more clogged up.
That was the factory oil job, not the oft cited consumer over-oiling.

I've since used the AEM dryflow in my Rubicon and Megacab diesel with much better results. Filtration-wise, that is.
Horse-pressure increases are negligable. I even Dyno-ed my diesel before and after and the new intake, air horn, and muffler delete gave a measly 6 hp . I think I got more from installing an SRT10 hood .

Was that a K&N? I haven't seen anything like that with mine and I've been looking for it every since I heard about people having problems.
