Who is still happy they bought a CRD and plans to keep it ..

There are significant number of postings recently with serious CRD issues. There are probably more folks posting who have had issues and are looking for help than satisfied customers who may have no reason to ever join a forum or tell of their good experiences. Sometimes we can get a complex about a vehicle because of the amount of negative postings we see because those are the poeple looking for help.

Edmunds postings seems to have a higher number of happy owners then here on this site. I'm coming up on the 100k Timing Belt change and would like some feedback before spending a lot of money. So far the Jeep has been good for us after the Green Diesel tuning.
So I'm just asking--are there satisified owners out there who are happy with their purchase and plan to keep their CRDs till 200-300k?

I plan to be a part of the 200,000 + mi club although I am only at 46,000 now. This is my third jeep so I have become quite patient with them.

I am happy with mine... in fact, after we traded it in so that my wife could get a new car, I tracked it down 3 months later and bought it back from another dealer. I plan to keep it. In fact I am looking to buy a small car for work so I can keep the CRD in decent shape. I recently gave my puddle jumper ('00 Toyota Echo) to a good friend of mine who is having some difficult times, so I need a replacement. I run 1000 miles per week sometimes, and so far the CRD is serving me well.

I believe your premise that there are more people dissatisfied with their CRD than there are satisfied owners is erroneous. There were around 15,000 of them sold in the US in 2005 and 2006. There are nowhere near 8,000 people on here complaining, and certainly nowhere near enough of them to suggest that there are 8,000 plus people who are among the disgruntled.

And for what it is worth, we keep our vehicles until the wheels fall off, and plan to do so with this one as well.

I have owned my CRD now for 4 years and 62k (now 109k on the clock) and I have never regretted my purchase, and hope the chassis lasts for years to come.

There are a few, at least three I know, that are more fair weather members of this forum. That is, we only come around when we are looking for help on some issue or another. I am quite sure there are others that do the same, thus it looks like problems are all these trucks are. In fact, I am here now researching glow plug issues for a friend who had problems starting this morning after sitting for 3 full days in the coldest weather of the year. Gauging a vehicle's long term viability on the frequency of "issues" that occur on trucks that, most of the time, have been hacked and mucked with by people who should never touch a motor, is just silly IMHO.

That said, the CRD is the only vehicle I have ever owned (22 thus far) that I have not felt some desire to mod the hell out of it. I have sensible things that improve the basic platform, but for the most part it looks 100% stock to the untrained eye. This goes to show that I am happy with what the truck is at its heart.

Since you are rounding up on 100k, I say fork out the cash and do your timing belt alone. This forum and the FSM is all you need beyond basic mechanical knowledge to do the fix yourself. Paid ~$80 shipped for the pin kit from the UK, and made my own cam pulley tool... could have done it with a couple wooden wedges.

I love mine, and plan on keeping till the wheels fall off. Bedsides, is there another SUV out there that gets 30mpg and Tows 5K lbs, 4x4, and as a bonus it's diesel!

I have had mine since this summer, It has 71,000 miles and so far so good, it has been running great, the mileage is awesome and living in the Colorado mountains it is nice to have a SUV that can go up the mountain passes like they are not even there.

People sometimes ask me why I went with the CRD when diesel is blah blah blah.

I simply say, "I get better fuel economy than the I-4 and can tow more than the V-6." That tends to shut them up.

We've had ours since 2006 and will keep it until it either falls to pieces around us or it becomes impossible to get parts.

I think I used misleading wording ... I meant to say it seems with so many postings of serious problems here and frustrated people, that it seems as though there are very few happy owners. I also meant to say that I may be getting an incorrect impression because there could be a number of happy owners out there who are not posting anywhere. Sometimes the people with problems are doing more posting since they are trying to get help and we can draw the conclusion that most owners are unhappy and the vehicle is a ticking time bomb.

I was looking for some feedback because so far I am very satisfied ... but all these threads with serious issues was making me wonder if buying this vehicle was a bad mistake.

No matter what vehicle you buy, there is the possibility that you will have problems at some point. Some years back a friend of mine ordered and bought a new LR Discovery to replace his old Series 3 to use for a long -range journey. He picked it up and only drove it about 200 yards down the road when it died. No idea why. It had to be shipped back to Land Rover to be sorted. The thing is that firstly, forums like this are for enthusiasts - likely to be a minority of owners, and secondly, that problems get posted or people post when they've found a better way to do something. No one posts just to say they have no problems or issues

I appreciate that CRDs are in the minority in the US, but they are (I would guess) far more common in the rest of the world - certainly in GB and Europe where we are far more used to small diesels in passenger vehicles - even high-end ones. Most people I've come across over here with CRD Kjs are very happy with them, and according to my dealer (a long - term Chrysler/Jeep dealer) very few problems over and above the usual expected percentage are reported.

After undoing the Bean Counter Engineering, shutting off the EGR and Ignoring the Very Stupid Chrysler recommendations like using 0W-40 oil that is not complying with VM specifications.
I am pleased with my CRD and plan to keep it.

I found the CRD because I was looking for something that could tow and be used as a daily driver getting decent fuel mileage. I did not want the expense of a daily driver and a "tow vehicle". It is by far the best solution. Purchased with 30k miles now 120k. I've never looked back or regretted a thing. Many of my race buddies are envious towing with much larger vehicles and getting 10-12 mpg. I tow every other weekend from March to mid Oct averaging 19 mpg towing. A GDE engine and trans tune, euro torque converter, the right oil (thanks warp) proper maintenance and a few gauges. I have enjoyed the vehicle very much.
I am a firm believer in the fact that we hear more problems than anything else in the forum. That's how some of us learn. It's great that we can share experiences and learn for each other, but to think that getting to the 300k mark is some great accomplishment is really not. This should be easily obtainable with proper maintenance. This is coming from someone who sold a 1994 Audi S4 running 21 pounds of boost for most of its life, original turbo, had 264k on the odometer when sold to buy the jeep. Vehicle before that was a 1987 325is sold with 293k still on the road last I heard. I wish everyone the same luck I've had so far with this one of a kind vehicle.

At this point, I have 133,000 miles on my CRD. I work on it myself for most everything except A/C re-charge and alignment accuracy. I have no plans to rid myself of this "Italian Mistress" motivated KJ.

I realize that expensive parts replacement is likely on the horizon: turbo, injectors, CP3 injection pump. As long as she runs and runs well, then I'll keep her.

Currently, Central Indiana has approx. one (1) foot of snow and travel restrictions abound. If the restrictions are lifted for my county, I plan on venturing out on Thursday. I can't wait to see how the new tires work in the snow.

We're at ~147,000 mi and counting, and plan to keep it.

No complaints so far.

I figure if the Italian tractor dies, perhaps I can find a 4BT to pop in there... :twisted:

the potential of the CRD is still to be realized, but figuring that stuff out is fun for me.

I bought one, liked it warts and all, and bought a second one intending to address many of the flaws in the design. I am keeping my eyes open for another parts jeep and will grab components as they are available. The combination of the performance of the diesel engine, both power and economy,and the handiness of the vehicle are compelling.

The first time I outdragged a MiniCooper I was hooked. :SOMBRERO:

. 30+ mpg on the highway with AT tires and low 20s around town. Will be doing TB in early Feb. My only complaint is I could always use more cargo space. I'd have that issue if I drove a suburban too. :roll:

This was me.

After reaching the point of putting the full price I paid for it, back into it for parts and repairs... AND then staring down yet another $8000 black hole, I had enough.

I still like the vehicle for the capabilities it offers. There isn't anything like a Jeep for shrugging off the weather and saying "Yea, I can drive through that" without a care. This Jeep excelled at that for me, in heavy snow too. The only times I got it stuck, I was doing something stupid, and I managed to get myself UN-stuck without a tow truck.

The problem I see: Chrysler. You aren't going to be able to undo that flaw, so tread cautiously. The road of good operation is narrow, and their are bottomless chasms of spent money on both sides, should you wander off that narrow path.

Who is still happy they bought a CRD and plans to keep it ..
