I have thought about making just the rear bumper without ever being able to add carriers at a later date with permanent welded cap and a flat bumper without the tire cutout, but that means no tire carriers at all, stock or add on. There wouldn't be any price diffence due to same amount of material and build time.

Hope that answers your questions.

OK guys, here is the first prototype all welded up, painted, and bolted on. Got it mounted this morning, and Ted hooked up his 2,000 lb pop up camper and drove nearly 8 hours up the Rockies to the LOST event in Moab without a problem. Wally has the second updated prototype at AllJ's shop waiting install, but I guess his rig wasn't able to make the Moab event, so I'll have to wait a few weeks for feedback on that. The next prototype will have all the updated improvements, but the basic appearance will be the same. I have worked on the carrier, but have run into a few minor problems that require a small change in the bumper itself. The main thing is, instead of the tire cutout in the bumper having the nice 45* angle piece, the cutout will have to be square for production. Not as asthetically pleasing, but not a big deal either. Main reason is the latch assembly will not work the way I want for best results with the current bumper setup. So, this slight change will make things much better in the long run.

Anyways, enough jabbering and onto the pictures. Sorry no carrier yet, or filler caps. Sorry about the ugly hitch thing too. Took the pictures as Ted was leaving for Moab.

Zang Za Dam! Hats off! It looks great! I sure could have used those shackles on both of the bumpers to get me out of a few of those nasty sand holes I've been in before.

Is that the finished product? I'm thinking it would look good with a filler panel under the taillights.

The open spot under the tail lights will get filled in If you don't want to be able to add carriers. I saw the bumper in action yesterday on Hells Revenge here in Moab and it ROCKS!! Makes a great improvement in departure angle and in person you can see it is BEEFY! I will definately be ordering two of these rear bumpers.

with the sides of the bumper bolting on to the back of the wheel well, if your bumper gets bumped in the corner it's going to crinkle the sheet metal. There is no give in the clearances of the bumper. I'd be more apt to buy one if it had about a 1/2" clearance between the sheetmetal and bumper. I'm sure it would take a bit of a hit to bend it but I'd much rather have a slightly bent corner of the bumper than the sheet metal being bent as well.

That's my only concern.

Catherine

how about '06 models? front and rear?

The bolts behind the wheelwell are for the jig and ease of building. not required, I do not have them on mine. As for bending this thing... You will need to hit it pretty hard... I hit it pretty good on the corner today on Poison Spiner with no damage at all. Yep I get the fun job... Go out and beat the crap out of it to try to break it!

Yes, he is trying to damage it...but not succeeding. He's going after all of the hard routes. No by-passes for him. If he doesn't damage it here in Moab, chances are slim that you will....unless you go hit an M-1A Abrahms tank with it.

Massive clearance front and back.

Ted going up the waterfall at Kane CreekCanyon. No touching.

Just to let you know. While many of us are banging our rear hitches or rear bumpers, Ted is not coming close at all. Same goes for the Rock Lizard front bumper.

Rock lizard your bumper were sick on Hells Revenge on Saturday. They completely changed the whole geometry of the vehicle. So when will you do a front bumper for the 2005. I already saving for the rear bumper.

Is there enough space to mount a winch inside the front bumper? HOW ABOUT THE 2006 MODEL??? I'd really like to be able to mount the winch inside the bumper but the reason why I haven't bought an ARB is because theirs is too high and covers the grill. I have a CRD and that requires a lot of cooling. I mostly like your design but it's not for an 06 and no internal winch mount.

Never satisfied,

Catherine

Still not quite clear on those parts that stick out under the taillights.... Will there be something to fill them in? It sounds like there r 2 bumper models, one that will accept carriers and one that will be filled in under the taillights. OR is the "filler" piece something that's removable (chunk of rubber or a reflector maybe) if I want the carriers later on? The more I see these, the more I want one!
Also, do I see a hole on the bumper in that area? Will that hole accept an auxiliary light mounted there?
And, with the spare on the gate (darn, I liked the 45 degree angles!) where does the plate mount?

There will be filler plates that bolt into those spots. My bumpers will be able to be "upgraded" with carriers at a later date, just unbolt those filler plates and bolt in the carriers. Only one rear bumper model.

As for the front bumper being able to squeeze in an internal winch mount...not possible. That bumper sits just a hair over two inches from the front crossmember, and that two inches is filled with a 2x2 steel tube that ties in the mounts and all the recovery points. This bumper sits 1.5" closer than the stock bumper. To fit in a winch, that bumper will stick out about 4-5" further than the stock bumper. ARB already makes a good internal winch bumper. I'm making a non winch bumper and don't plan to make any winch bumpers (atleast not in the very near future).

Thanks for the feedback so far guys.

Oh, and this seems to be appearing about everyother post...

I will be making 05+ KJ bumpers, but I can only do one major project at a time. Please be patient with me. I am just a one man operation right now, designing, researching and building new KJ products, building and packaging old XJ products, answering the phone, building and updating the website, trying to answer emails and PM's, and trying to keep the shop/office clean once in awhile.:D All this while trying to keep the wife and kids in line.:D

I have a local '05 meeting with me this week to test fit skink sliders and will probably be able to talk him into being a guinea pig for the 05+ front bumpers. My goal is to have an 05+ front prototype before the end of May.
