if you take care of them and know diesels they will last, the VM motor is designed to go 500K til rebuild. its a sleeved motor. i have put it to the test- ive towed my 35 hp 4x4 front end loader tractor with it and gpt pulled over for speeding. the cop told me that " the only reason he pulled me over was cause the tractor was bigger than the jeep" it happen to be a buddy of mine. i pulled a f350 out of the mud, i whooped as* on a 6.0 powerstroke off the line and never caught up either. this vehicle is awesome. i want another. the only thing i hate is that it is so rare that u cant get parts and no scanners will read them

I get bad fuel economy when I go to one certain low cost fuel station. Not worth the 10 cents per gallon savings.

I have similar issues of bad MPG and found out that I needed to clean map sensor replace air filter and my Tstat was bad so after doing all the above mentioned I was able to get to 20 MPG in 41 F weather but my next tank in 32 F only came back up to 15 MPG.
Am I missing something here? Any help.

I would look at the following: (some you may have done)

1. Check the air cleaner.
2. Clean the MAP sensor.
3. Last time the fuel filter changed?
4. Engine temp should be at 1/2, if not you have a bad thermostat.
5. Inspect all the inlet hoses and intercooler for leaks.
6. Inspect the turbocharger for looseness. The turbine wheel should have very little movement.
7. Pull the injectors and have them tested.
8. Have you had the intake off? If not...@ 180k you most likely have worn rockers keeping the valves from fully opening.

Just a start...Good luck!

My crd is 06 160k Kim's so just 100k miles as stated I had replaced air cleaner, cleaned sensor replaced fuel and air filter replaced Tstat so it is at 1/2 all hoses replaced 6,7,8 not done for lack of knowledge resources......so I guess it is a major issue than a minor one ......thanks

4-t-stat is bad trying to find a GOOD but cheap 1, without ordering it from the stealership it only barely gets to a 1/4
5-brand new samco a2a hoses
6-turbo has a lil end shaft play but expected with mileage not too bad i have cummins with more play on them
7-going to do a BG injector flush at work
8-intake has not been off!!! so i need to replace the rockers??? do they make roller rockers for them?

That is likely your cause, the safest way is to to it from a stealership. You can do an inline one (the stant one is the most popular) for around 30 bucks IIRC, and some coolant to replace what's lost. The MAP sensor is on the monifold on the driver's side near the rear of the engine.

2- which one is the map sensor? i need to do that then!

See the noob guide for pictures and a how to. Good luck!

#4. Thermostats in our CRD's are a problem for sure. There are several posts showing a inline 195 degree thermostat. I have a Stant 13519. Very easy.

#8. As far as your Rockers? They are rollers. But the pin that holds the roller get worn down and will break on high milage engines. I had several worn at only 96k and replaced all of them. I sent the old ones to Green Diesel Engineering (GDE) testing. Keith at GDE stated he was looking into why the pins get worn so quickly. If I had nearly 200k on a set of rockers, I would change them at my next timing belt change.

FYI...Removing the intake to get to the rockers is a big job. Have done it a few times, PM me with any questions.
