Hi I have seen different filters recommended here like Wix 51773 or 51515 or 51516 and Mobil 1 M1 301 as also Amsoil ones. I need your input on which is best suited for 7 Quarts application with good filter action capabilities? Thanks.

I will add one more that I consider to be better then all....... the oversized Bosch 3500 will outperform most of them and can be purchased at Walmart.

Racertracer.....
With the Bosch 3500 is it still an even 7 quart fill? Also.....why do you like the Bosch (have never used one) and how do you feel it compares to the Mobil 1 M-301 which is what I have been using.

Thanks, Jim

Please list the reason for your selection as I have heard that Amsoil is better for it filters to lower level of microns i do not know its part number for jumbo version, and i have heard some criticism of 1773 and preference to 51515 for better fitting, now Mobil claims it can filter 28 grams of conteminates that is impressive too, heard Bosch and Mobil 1 are both made by same third party mfg. so basically are the same. Any comments or correction to the above are welcomed.....thanks.

Pardon me for condemning other filters in my previous post, I shouldn't have done that, I am not familiar with all of them.

I don't have an oil analysis as proof either. I can only provide my own visual 3 week inspection of the oil after an oil change.

I became a fan of the Bosch Distance Plus oil filter after a 1200 mile visual inspection of the 5w-40 TDT motor oil after a recent oil change. The oil was relatively clear compared to my experiences with other filters that I used in the past, indicating that the Bosch filter was doing a great job.

Bosch indicates that the correct OEM comparable oil filter # to use with the 2005-2006 Liberty CRD is the 3425. I use the #3500 instead because it is a larger filter allowing more oil in the pan and is readily available at the local Wal-Mart.

A visual inspection of the oil may not be the correct way to test the cleaning capacity between oil filters but it works for me and is all the proof I need.

My current vehicle modifications are the MAF disconnect and EHM.

Mash on the Bosch web link for more information about the filter: http://www.boschautoparts.com/Filters/P ... lters.aspx

The Amsoil number for the larger filter is EAO15. This is a full synthetic media with 20u @ 98.7% filtration efficiency. I use this in conjunction with a 2u bypass filter on my CRD. Info here: https://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/filters-and-by-pass-systems/oil/amsoil-ea-oil-filters/?GroupID=191&zo=501359

Racer,
Thanks for the info. The reason I asked is that it is time to change my oil and I happen to have a WalMart gift card :D . I'd love to be able to buy a Bosch filter and use my gc rather than pay cash for the Mobil 1 at Advance Auto.

Jim

So the Bosch 3500 is not a 7 qt fill like the Wix 51773?

It is not a matter of mine is better than yours but idea is to have a discussion and find a better filter based on solid reasoning so thanks for your inputs.

The only way to find a better filter is through test data which includes micron rating, and most importantly filtration efficiency.

Micron rating is pretty straight forward...the size of the dirt particle.

Filtration efficiency is most overlooked but the most important...the percentage of the amount of dirt for a given particle size removed from the oil on 1 pass through the filter media.

Many filters may advertise they are 15 or even 10 micron filters. What they fail to disclose is at what filtration efficiency? These may be at 40% or so efficiency meaning 60% of the dirt at this particle size is recirculated through the system to create more wear. A much better filter would be a 20 micron with a 98% efficiency, for example.

A filter can be manufactured at 10 micron and 98% efficiency but then effective filter life is compromised due to early filter plugging and unfiltered oil then going through the built in bypass valve in the filter to circulate through the engine.

In my opinion, one filter can't do it all and that is why I have bypass filters on both my '05 Liberty CRD and '11 Ram Cummins. The bypass filter will remove 2 micron particles at an efficiency of 98.7%...no full flow filter can do this alone or even at all. The bypass filter will remove soot as well, another enemy to our engine oil and our engines.

Well I hope to add the bypass setup. But my paycheck just shriveled a bit. it will take a few months to get back the cash for the bypass

Where did you install and plumb the carrier to?

There is a spin-on adapter that spins onto the factory oil filter location. Hoses from this spin-on adapter provides the oil supply and oil return for the dual filter mount. I will add that picture to my web page when I get a chance.

I just uploaded a picture of the spin-on adapter. Please note that this is an older style cast adapter. The new ones are machined billet aluminum. Here: http://www.syntheticlubes.com/crd_bypass.html

http://store.fs2500.com/FS2500enginekit.aspx This kit is supposed to be made for the CRD. They also claim almost amazing filtration efficiency. Also, it appears to involve less plumbing that the Amsoil system.

Last week, I bought Amsoil at a 'storefront' dealer nearby. He had the oil and CRD oil filter in stock. I looked at the charts and decided to go with a M1 301. Years ago oil filters were big news. Fram was determined to be crap because the filter media disintegrated along with lack of anti-drainback valve. In the end, the ones with synthetic filter media (or part synthetic) were determined to be best. Purolator Pure One came in first and M1 came in 2nd. Yep, this is all just historically interesting at this point.

Amsoil's 98% efficiency at 20 micron does not tell all. Blackstone and others (with no profit motive) say that a lot of engine wear happens at the 5 micron level. They also point out that overall filter efficiency is purposefully not published by manufacturers.

Just about the only thing everyone agrees on is that a bypass system is by far the most efficient. I doubt anyone's mileage will vary on that. I'm finished with messing around under the hood of cars for the winter. I will install some kind of bypass in the spring.
