Hey all,

Well driving, i noticed heavy engine oil from the engine leaking, towed it to my mechanic, it is pouring oil out of the front end from the cover (as per mechanic). Not a turbo hose. He says could be a cam seal and may need to be torn apart and rebuilt. No estimate yet as he has only had it for a few hours in a busy shop.

Does any one know where I could possibly find a used motor(if the rebuild is too expensive for my budget)?

Thanks all

Depending on what the rebuild cost is, maybe my KJ is what you need. Your wiring is probably good (mine apparently isn't) and my branded title kills the resale value. You could part out the rest if you wanted. I'm in Indy. viewtopic.php?f=35&t=72895

Thanks for the links. We have not gone into it yet. The shop was busy with other vehicles. So we will see what happens...

Oil leaking from the front? That would be a new failure mode for these, I haven't heard about anything like that before on here. One good thing, you have arrived at the world's best userbase for these engines in this vehicle. I don't think there is a single problem with these Jeeps that we haven't already seen and fixed... Except possibly yours, if the diagnosis holds. :JEEPIN:

Let us know what your mechanic finds (try to be there yourself, first-hand descriptions are always better) and we can advise from there.

Ya it's defiantly not something he has seen before. I lost about a quart in the driveway and street waiting for a tow truck. So it is spewing out. Last we talked it was dripping from the front of the engine (to the skid plate) and turbo hoses had no leaks. No obvious leaks from the top looking in. Monday when he is open will should be the real diagnosis day.

Well it is a jeep and we all know what that means...just empty every pocket!

Haha

Cheers all

Looking thru the parts diagrams and speculating I'd wonder about the camshaft seals; crankshaft seal; or the front portion of the oil pan gasket. You might want to get it on a lift and drop the front skid to look things over from the bottom before pulling the stuff off the front to get to those seals.

Another thought although it's not right at the front of the engine would be the oil cooler (passenger side toward the front) and the 2 turbo lines but they are fairly far back on the passenger side.

Thanks for the tips. Tomorrow I will check in and give him those thoughts. I hopefully want a quick repair. But I am thinking not :p

UPDATE: Sorry for the delay

It was the front crank seal that blew out.

The cause could be one of two things:

My EHM was routed to the rear of the Jeep. It was either too long causing resistance and a pressure build up occurred blowing the front seal

or

The CCV puck was plugged/broken up causing the pressure build up.

So we replaced the front seal ($28 from DC), did the timing belt (saturated in oil but still in great condition) since we had to take it off (might as well do preventative maintenance), water pump and pulleys were good. The smoke blowing out is gone, turbo sounds good, turbo hoses feel good and look good. I would still like to replace them with Samco.

Removed the EHM, new CCV puck (DC Name: Valve - Pressure Relief) and rerouted back into the intake as per stock. Oil topped up and new air filter.

When the funds grow back and I have time I hope to get the GDE Eco tune.

I am just lucky it was not the rear seal!

Good to hear. I'd put Samcos and a GDE tune high on your list of to does with GDE tune highest if the CAC hoses are still good. If you do put back a EHM I'd suggest doing so with a Provent not just a hose. IIRC the provent has relief valve which prevents blowing seals if the system gets plugged up.

I have had a look at the Provent. Looks like. Well engineered modification.

But wouldn't a simple catch tank as fitted to many older vehicles be just as good without the need to clean a filter every so often?

With the right tank you could reroute the EHM directly inside and no longer run the risk of blowing seals when the hose freezes.

Not a big fan of routing oily vapours onto the road either as some forum members have done.

I know you want to make sure you don't smell any unpleasent odours, but is directing oily substances onto the roadway that good an idea.

If driving off road surely this will get into the water and soil also.

Perhaps not in huge quantities but causing pollution is never a good idea in any quantity surely?

My thoughts for what they are or are not worth keeping in mind that I don't have the EHM or Provent:
1. IMHO the "soot" issue is more related to EGR function than the routing of oil vapors. Keep in mind as far back as the 1970's those same oil vapors were dumped directly from the PCV valve into the air cleaner and then into the carborator for what that's worth. With the GDE tune and oil/filter changes every 6,000 miles I'm not too worried about soot.
2. on the other hand oil vapors are not good for the CAC hoses, the airbox to turbo hose, and under certain circumstances, high soot load for example, could clog the intercooler but Samcos take care of the CAC hose issue and I'll take my chances with the intercooler based the rather small amount of oil people report being captured in various catch systems which is rather small. As for the airbox to turbo hose I check that at each oil change and at 48,000 miles the original is just fine.
3. no I don't like venting to ground either.
4. there are a variety of catch can options including Provent, home made variations of a provent, simple catch can w/wo drain, BMW (IIRC) centrifigal catcher, etc. Depending on what you use if the weather is cold enough the catch system can freeze and if there is no pressure relief (even a few small slits in the hose near the CCV might be enough) you can blow a seal. My understanding is the Provent has a pressure relief valve built in. So if I was to do anything like this it probably would be a Provent or equivalent with a relief valve.
