I am still running the stock STs on my Libby, because with OldNavy's good advice I've kept them aired up so they work OK.
They are nothing great in mud, but I've managed to slip on by. Last weekend I went out to the farm to shoot some feral hogs
and the adventure is coming to an end. They were fine when I stopped to open the gate, but after closing it, one of the STs
was flat. Apparently, I ran over a piece of sharp gravel. There was a 3/4" gash with smaller splits radiating away from it.
The main gash went all the way through, but the smaller ones didn't. So that tire is dead. I had hoped to get an adjustment
from Goodyear, but those lousy STs are already worn to the wearbars with only 12K miles on them.

So I need new tires. The Goodyear salesman offered me more STs and seemed surprised when I laughed at him. I don't think I was rude?

QUESTION: I do most of my driving on pavement. My offroading is gooey mud. I might get to Moab someday, but I'll never
be excited about taking my Jeep on trails that risk ruining my CRD - I'm too old for that static. I also don't really want my
tires singing louder than the soprano in Mozart's Magic Flute. So, I figure the best bet for me is a wide P255/65R16 with a
semi-mud-clearing tread pattern. Something that is very good on highway and pretty good in mud. Do Revos fill that bill?
BFG something?

I think the Revos work very well as a dual purpose tire. I do a lot of freeway driving for work and they handle like a sports car (I have the P255/70R16 size). Aired down to 20psi for a day of offroading and they did very well. Check out my cardomain site for pictures. The first few pictures are from the time when the tires were my only upgrade.

There are a lot of other opinions on tires, and there is a tire section on this website - but for the CRD (at least mine), the Revos work very well.

If you go to Moab - get an extra set of junk rims with some E-load rated off road tires. All the sharp rocks out there are hard on the sidewalls.

The General Grabber AT2 tire comes in 255/65-16 size, and can be bought for ~$85 each. Check tirerack.com. Also, the General looks and performs just like the famous BFG ATs, but they are literally half the price. I bought my entire set for $422. I LOVE mine so far...have been through everything with them and they have served me wonderfully. For $86 bucks each I certainly cannot complain at all. Once you take the Goodyear ST tires off your Jeep and see for yourself how flimsy the sidewalls are...it will scare you to death that you even drove the Jeep on the highway with them. It's ridiculous. I swear the T-shirt I had on that day was as thick as the sidewalls on those Goodyear STs...

Back in the day I used to keep to sets of tires for my old CJ7, one all season and one off road tire. From looking at the tires on the Liberty I would say they were chosen for the soccor moms who never go off road and would at worst see a few inches of snow couple time a year. That description fits my wife's CRD perfectly by the way.

Most any tire will do fine if you stick to the 2.5 or lower rated moab trails. I just did a trail in moab that was a 3. I used my stock tires, didn't lower the pressure, and took it easy. I would say Revos or BFGs would be fine. If you want some great on road action get Michelines (spelling). IMHO!

If you want a tire that wears like iron and has incredible wet traction the life of the tire the Michelin LTX M/S is the way to go. They can be pricey but that last a very long time. I wanted something a bit more aggresive and went with BFGoodrich TAO's I like the extra stiff sidewall of the KO's. Price Costco for eithor I paid $111 each for the KO's ounted balanced and road hazard plus tax.

Cooper Discover M/S. Put 235/70's on. Nice agressive/quite tread. Got them from Big-O tires for 69.00 each. They are outstanding in mud and snow and wet. One thing they do really well is DIG. I noted when in some soft ground.. they were trowing chunks that would put a cow (yeah, the MOO kind) to shame. When I got on the road, earth was flying all over. They were a welcome change from the stock tires. And cheap. They do have DEEP tread so they will pick up rocks.

I may have overstated the size. I got the 255-65 from a tire store guy, but I was as Sam's this morning and they refused to consider anything that big. I think they said the max was 235-65-16. I really don't want a taller tire, but I'd like them a little wider.

Here is mine back when I had stock suspension and only 588 miles on the ODO. These are P255/70R16 Revos and DID NOT RUB AT ALL on pavement. Only rubbing offroad in the driverside rear wheel well where the fuel filler neck pokes a little bump into the wheel well area, and on the pinchweld plastic cover in the rear of the front wheel wells - only at a turn when the tire edge comes close to the pinch weld:

Discount Tire Co. and any Firestone Service Center lists this size as a stock option for 2005+ Jeep Liberties (maybe even earlier).

At this point I would have walked out and never considered buying there again. They obviously do not know how to read tire sizes. And if they can't read tire sizes they certainly don't need to be installing any.

I have 255/70-16s, and even they are only 0.5" taller than stock. A 255/65-16 would actually be just a hair shorter than the stock tires. This size would fit perfectly on the CRD with or without a lift kit. And it would look great and perform better.

This is a little unrelated but deal with new tires.

I'm looking at changing out my tires as well. I lthink I want to go with a 245/70 R16 size. So I call up a tire dealer and he tells me if have a TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) on my vehicle he cannot change the tire size (he say's it's a federal law).

Do we have TPMS on our Liberty's? I did not get any option related to this when I bought the vehicle. Is this standard on our Jeeps?

It was not standard, and not sure it was optional. By law all passenger cars & truck will have this by '09 I think (not sure of date) at that time will be illegal to do anythig to disable it by repair shops. As far as I have read (very little actually) I seem to remember to change a tire size is not illegal as long as system was left operational.

OK just an update. After numerous calls...2006 Liberty's have a tire pressure monitoring system; standard equipment. You can further identify it by have grey metal valve stem caps and an idiot light on your dash.

There appears to be a lot of confusion in the marketplace regarding upsizing tires with this type of system, but here's my take: It ain't no big deal.

I'm going with Bridgestone Revo's 245/70 16 and they're getting put on Saturday. :D

My 2005 Limited has the pressure monitoring system. It was a $75 option.

So it did not rub during stock set up? So the 245/75/16s are smaller than 255s i think. Is the crd taller than the gassers or something? Just wondering because i am still looking for tires and thinking of a good excuse to get them.

Just found these and these look nice. 255/65/16 for about $150 each. Conti Cross Contact They are only T-speed rated but I have to look some more.

Image

Second choice are these Yokahama Geolander G011 Hspeed rated.

Image

There are a ton of tires in this size here.
