For a cold diesel start, a battery with CCAs to spare is only prudent. On a cold day without a plug-in (away from home) you need to have the necessary CCA for longer or mutliple attempts to start that are typically not needed on a gasoline engine that is in good working order. You never know when a glow plug may quit and you may be starting initially on 3 cylinders till the 4th fires properly. You never know when even your winterized fuel may start to gel a little and pump more slowly. Prudence would suggest going above the specified CCA before going below it.
Ditto that. I've always been a believer in big batteries in diesels, just for those resons you specified. My CRD had a bad alternator decoupler when I got it. I replaced the entire alternator. I got a new battery while I was at it. The original Optima still worked in the '05, which was impressive. It was cranking a little slow on these cold Ohio mornings. I replaced it with the Advanced Auto gold battery. It starts great now, with a 3 year battery warranty.
