Greetings,

I am about to purchase an 06 CRD. I took a test ride today and it all seemed quite nice (only 40,600 miles) but when I went to start it I never saw any glow plug light.

We went by a dealership and they plugged it in and it isn't throwing any codes. He checked all the blubs and they're fine.

Is it normal to not see the glow plug light come on at all if the engine is already warm? Every diesel I've owned the light comes on if only for a second.

I'm not sure what to do on this. The lady selling seems straight up and it has a perfect carfax showing dealer service. I took it to one of the dealers on the car fax for the quick check.

If I buy it this week I'd be taking it to Vermont this weekend and the last thing I want is a cold starting issue.

I think that on the day of delivery I'm going to ask her to leave it out overnight and not to start it on the morning of delivery. If I get there and don't see a glow plug light I'll be looking for a price drop.

Yes, if the vehicle is equipped with the original ceramic glow plugs, then you will never see the glow plug light come unless the CRD has been sitting in below freezing temps over night.

The original ceramic glow plugs were quick to ignite and the light hard to detect when it came on.

You might notice the light come on for just a second if you keep your eyes peeled on the dash at first days turning of the ignition key after a cold night.

That's about the fastest on/off light I've ever seen such that you often won't see it unless you are looking right at it at ignition on. You might try invoking the bulb/gauge check by holding the trip odometer button while turning the ignition on but not starting the engine. IIRC it will cycle through all bulbs and gauges.

When I took it to the dealer he said he did a bulb check in addition to the code read.

Now I'm totally pumped to get this CRD home.

Next question is regarding the factory trailer hitch and 7 pin connector. Does this come with a trailer brake controller too?

If you have the factory tow, there should be a wire in the left kick panel. Mine didn't and I had to run my own wires.

No, the tow package does not include a brake controller, you will have to buy one and add it. As mentioned, the wiring for it is present, however, so all you have to do is plug it in and find a place to mount it.

And I agree with the previous posters: Under really cold starting conditions, you will see the GP light for only a couple seconds. A cold start at temps above 40, maybe a second. With a warm engine, at night in the dark, if you are looking right at it, you might catch the barest flash, but you'll not see it in daylight. A 2006 with only 40,000 miles is not quite broken in yet, although it is old enough you probably shouldn't wait until you hit 100,000 to replace the timing belt, simply due to age.

On the timing belt how far would you go past 40k in six years?

My . The FSM says 100,000 miles with no mention of months/years. The Gates catalog says 6 years or whatever the vehicle manufacture says. We just did the belt on my son's 06 at ca. 52,000 miles and will soon do my 05 at about 48,000 miles.

My thought process - I've got all the tools and the swap just takes a bit of time, the serp belt already needs replacing at ca. 50K, the engine (as with most if not all diesels) is an interference engine so bad things happen if timing goes, I'm retired and not putting that many miles on per year (at current rate won't hit 100K for at least 11 more years) and son drives a bit more but not that much if one discounts coming home from Tempe, AZ and a grad student business trip to the New England area, belt cost $75. So for $75 I figure cheap insurance let's swap at 6 years or 100k whichever comes first.

What did we find in the swap on the 06. Serp belt had spotty cracks in the raised ribs but not near each other or on the same rib (maybe 8-10 on the whole belt). TB had no cracks but was noticable "harder" than the new Gates belt.

At seven years 97k miles it took bending the OEM tb to a very tight radius to see the cracks. Yes, it felt 'harder' than the Gates. The next change will be around 6 yrs, 60k miles.

IMO, seven years on the OEM belt is plenty, regardless of mileage.
