I just got a 2005 Liberty CRD. I haven't done any ORM's yet but want to install a SEGR and Elephant Hose Mod as previously it has had a new EGR (with short lived results). I think it runs good? It starts well, idles well and seems "peppy". Currently I have two Codes: P0299 (Turbo Underboost Condition) and P1253 (No DTC Definition). I don't have an Enigma Machine to determine if this code is actually another code. So I went to work looking at things.

First, the intake hose to the turbo inlet is "gooky". Both hoses to and from the CAC are also "gooky". I disconnected the hoses, cleaned and tested them for leaks and they seem OK, individually. However, When I attached the hose to the CAC that comes from the turbo, sealed it and put pressure to it to see how air flows through the CAC, the hose stiffens up and very little air flow comes through the other side of the CAC.

The previous owner I think runs 10W-40 Delo and his fuel is from old heating oil tanks that has been filtered with Lucas fuel supplement added to it. Is it possible the CAC is full of oily crap and blocking airflow like someone with pnuemonia? I think it runs good, but was told it used to run better and that fuel economy is down.

Please let me know your thoughts on how to proceed and what steps I should take. Thanks.

John

Howdy John - Welcome to LOST

you might get more answers over in the 'CRD Love that Torque' section - that's the major discussion - Tech is for solutions after the fact.

there's also the Noob guide http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=604519#p604519
lots of good information and links

as to the CAC hose - if there's a restriction in the Hose at all - somethings wrong - it's probably delaminating - normally they split lengthwise and lose pressure that way.

The root problem is the design on the crackcase vent - it blows oil into the intake and a rubber based hose will eventually die.
there's a 2 part fix - one is to do a Provent or EHM and stop the oil - second - get some Silicon based hoses that can survive the oil.

I don't know about the heating oil there - if it's close to standard diesel it might be okay - but I suspect it's not - but I think that would be more of an issue with unburned byproducts getting into the oil and affecting bearings.

Thanks for the info. I did read the Noob guide and view the other sight before writing.

This isn't a hose issue. Hoses are OK. I put compressed air into the hose from the turbo (used a block-off with air chuck) to the CAC. Very limited air flows through the outlet of the CAC, telling me the restriction is in the CAC.

I'll put my question to this technical sight to: 1) find out what code P1263 actually means (in conjunction with the other codes and operating conditions I noted) and 2) to find out if there is something other than "gook" that blocks the free flow of air through the CAC?

I guess I'll ask another way. Is air supposed to flow freely through the CAC? Since we are only looking at the CAC (not the hoses or any other component), if air is supposed to flow freely through it, what other than "gook" or a dead rat could be restricting the air flow?

Before tearing out the radiator, fan, shroud, etc. to get the CAC out for cleaning (if this is what is supposed to be done), I would like to know what a properly operating CAC is actually like.

I have more info on other components, driving impressions, tests and repairs I am doingice my post yesterday if more info is needed. Thanks for any help.

John

p1263 is the #2 glowplug (although some of the harnesses are backwards - you have to measure resistance to verify)

the CAC should be an open shot from the end of the turbo to the intake manifold - if you have a resistance - something's broken
(although I'd expect most fails to be air leaks)

and it would be really hard to fill up enough oil to make a noticeable difference.

Thanks for the info. I'll check my glow plugs tomorrow.

As for the airflow issues with the CAC, last night I had a brain fart that came to me when I looked over at my flowbench and realized I couldn't possibly get any volume of air through my air chuck and schrader valve thhat was feeding the CAC during my initial tests. I hooked up the flow bench to it and it blow through with very little restriction. WEW!

Tanks everyone for helping.

John
