Hello all,

I just picked up my 2005 CRD a week ago. I've been looking for one for a while and finally found one in my price range. I was lucky the timing belt/water pump and fuel filter/head replacement was already done on it. I have a couple questions...

1.) I read a thread regarding the F-37 recall noting that the trans will shift into 5th at 64 MPG vs. 59 MPG when stock. Mine shifts into 5th at 59 MPG so I'm guessing the recall was not done.?? My CRD has 103,000 on it and it shifts and runs great with no TC shudder. Should I consider getting the recall done on it or should I not worry about it since it's gone 103,000 miles with no issues?

2.) I would like to do some light towing with it. I have a 6x12 open trailer with ramp that I occasionally haul a couple thousand pounds on. Total weight around 3,000 pounds. Should I be concerned about towing this weight without the F-37 recall done on it?

So far I'm loving the power and economy of the CRD. I'm looking forward to many miles of fun. Thanks in advance for any help.

Billy

#1 Welcome to LOST.

#2 Has your timing belt been done?

#3 Lite towing should be ok. If you start towing Travel Trailers or 6500lb generators, then its time for changes.

You can go to http://www.jeep.com/en/ owners section and lookup outstanding recalls based on your VIN #. It's likely that the F-37 was done but the TCM was not programmed for the F-37 shift points as that has been known to happen (did to me). You should be ok with that tow weight as long as you pay attention to engine and tranny temps and don't push speed too hard. I would strongly recommend replaceing the OEM mechanical engine fan clutch and metal fan with a Hayden severe duty fan clutch (Hayden # 2905) and the Jeep gasser nylon fan 52079654AD or 52079654AE. The Hayden is much stronger than the OEM clutch and engages sooner in the overheat curve.

I note you say the timing belt and WP were done and assume you have proof positive, as in copy of bill, not just word of mouth.

Finally welcome and check out Sir Sam's NOOB guide at the top of the forum.

Thanks!

I'll check out the recalls based on my VIN# and look into the fan clutch/fan. Is there any place you recommend purchasing the clutch?

I do have paperwork on the timing belt/water pump replacement.

I checked out the NOOB guide a while back. I've been poking around on this forum for a while doing my homework on these before I bought one. My father was a diesel mechanic and I've owned a few diesel vehicles along with rebuilding one diesel engine. It's nice having a mechanic around to teach you while growing up! The rebuild was on a rare vehicle like the CRD. It was a 1985 Toyota Corolla diesel. Toyota made them for 2 years. We drove it to California after the rebuild. No turbo made it interesing in the mountains but we got about 40 MPG!

You can get the Hayden via Amazon for a reasonable price and free shipping. The nylon fan is a dealer item but not too pricey. The hard part is getting the OEM fan off see http://www.beesvillebeefarm.com/jeep.html for a hint on how to hold the fan base in place (allen key or an approriate deep socket on a rachet drive to reach the picture nut) and I'd recommend a fan shroud mod to make future access easier for that see viewtopic.php?f=98&t=64278&p=709322#p709322 .

Couple of other fan removal thoughts:
1. a towel or piece of cardboard between the fan and the radiator to prevent radiator damage is a good idea.
2. the 2 bolts holding the shroud in place go into 2 nuts that are loosely capture in a plactic bracket - a) zip tie around the plastic bracket to keep the nuts fully captured and b) be sure to use the same bolts on reinstall (longer bolts can puncture radiator).
3. below the 2 bolts are 2 tabs - on reinstall be sure they engage in the slots on the radiator.
4. you will need to clip the zip ties holding AC/coolant overflow hose to shroud (redo on reinstall) - once done they can be moved out of the way. The AC one toward the engine.
5. the shroud will need to be tilted right and then left to work it out past the CAC hoses. Tight fit but doable. Reinstall is the reverse.
6. a bit of antiseize on the clutch nut on reinstall makes future removal less painful.
7. no need to make much effort to tighten the fan clutch nut on reinstall. Fan tightens on its own as it spins.

Great info!

That fan shroud mod would have been handy when I replaced the serpentine belt! I kicked myself in the butt for installing the alternator 1st, and then routing the belt. I'll be doing that mod when I do the fan/clutch.

Antiseize...that stuff is like Frank's Red Hot sauce, I put it on everything!

Update...

I got my fan/clutch upgrade in hand. Clutch was $40 shipped (Fleabay, guy only had 1). The fan was $63 shipped. I'll be installing it next week.

I went to owner's section on the Jeep website and put in my VIN. It said there is no recall on my VIN#. Does that mean it's been done? The PO did a great job on maintenance...with documentation. I would think they would have done it. A lot of service was done at a dealership.

If the site does not show an outstanding recall then it was done.
