Where To Buy New Torque Converter?

Looking to buy a new torque converter. Got a quote from dealer for $630. There had to be a cheaper option. I know a Suncoast is $700. Does anybody know any other companies that sell the euro torque?

I bought a bunch of engine parts from "the VM specialists" in the UK...

they were great to deal with: parts were about 60% of the cost of north american online retailers, and about 35% of the cost of the stealerships...

I emailed them today (their night time) asking about getting the euro spec TC...

I'm amusing they will be able to source one and ship it here for like 300 usd landed

(of course there's the old saying about assumptions)

once I know, I will post pack here and let everyone know.....

I bought one from Johnny and have been generally happy with it. I run the GDE Full Torque tune. For a stock vehicle it will eliminate shudder. They claim it is good for Hemi Torque, but I have managed to get it to vibrate slightly in certain uphill circumstances, and some of this is just more driveline 'grumble' due to the more connected feel of the TC. I think the weakness of that TC is that it continues to utilise the stock housing and the clutch surface area limitations. For it's cost it is a good option, but I would not recommend it for a Hot tune vehicle or the GDE turbo upgrade vehicles because I think it would shudder under that kind of torque - a billet type TC is probably a better option for those vehicles.

It's such a major job to change it, you want to be sure that the one you pick is going to be everything you want. Be aware that with a billet type TC your fuel economy may suffer due to the increased mass of the TC compared to the Torco stock shell type upgrade.

as far as I know, the "euro" TC uses the same housing as well, and it can hold the hot tune torque....

Thanks for the replies. I look forward to what the specialist in England is able to come up with regarding price.

As to the Euro tc vs the original tc, to my understanding the unit is exactly the same except for bigger springs. If this is the case, would it not be just as easy to get the original tc upgraded with the newer springs? Or are these tc unable to be re-manufactured?

Keep us posted on the Euro TC. Mine is starting to shudder worse. Today it shuddered at 50mph in lockup pretty bad a few times. I am thinking I will do the TC after I do the glow plugs and the timing belt service.

It really isn't a question about "keep us posted" - the Euro TC has proven reliable and very strong (perhaps stronger than the aftermarket alternatives). The price you were quoted frankly isn't too bad for an OE unit, but call some different dealers and see if someone can get you a small break in price.

What I meant is keep us posted on being able to get a Euro converter here in the US as well as pricing on the said Euro unit. Last I heard was that they were difficult or impossible to get in the US currently...

Just phoned the dealer up -

The euro T/C number has been crossed to a RL037142AA, reman number. I have to believe that the reman is of Euro internals, but I have no data otherwise

List price is $467, $100 core. I can have one here tomorrow.

The RL037142AA is and has been a valid number for a reman of a TC shell to the internal specs of the Euro TC (PN 68037142AA). It's great news if you can actually get them in North America. As of about June 2012 folks were being told (confirmed by MrMopar64) that the Euro TC in any form had been placed back on restricted to the export market only. There was some suggestion that this had something to do with some EPA emissions nonsense probably related to installing a "2007" part on a pre-2007 vehicle. Personally I find that surprising as EPA certainly doesn't care about any other replacement TC that I've ever heard about and the TC alone does not have any emissions impact. In fact the Euro TC is what the factory should have installed from the get go and certainly should have installed instead of the silly F-37 detune. The 05/06 models clearly met EPA standards for those model years prior to the F-37 so I don't see how installing a TC that would support the vehicle tune as originally produced could be a problem but then with nearly 30 years in the Florida state environmental program I've rarely found EPA rational about much of anything.

no offence to IDparts, but it looks like they're just selling refurbed TC's with a high markup.

Johnny can sell em' for 170 with no core...

I'm still waiting to hear back from him with regards to weather or not they're "euro" spec'ed or not.

What IDparts is selling is the Euro, which has only been available as a reman (PN RL037142AA) for quite some time. How he got that unit I don't know because as of last summer DCJ put them back on "export" market only and wouldn't sell them thru US dealers.

How after market units compare to the Euro I don't know other than the Suncoast of course.

Papaindigo would you recommend a Suncoast over the Euro TC? I am thinking if the dealers wants almost the same price I might as well choose the best. I wish someone in Canada would be into remanufacturing the old tc to euro tc specs.

Also, does anyone know of a parts supplier in Canada that provide the Suncoast TC? Or are these units inly purchased from the company in the USA?

As far as I know the Euro is a solid TC and IIRC Keith at GDE, you might email him to check, is running one behind his Stage II Turbo which I know has enough juice to instantly cause the stock post F-37 TC to sudder. By instant I mean as soon as I hit the go pedal after installing the Stage II turbo. I know others on the forum have towed fairly substantial rigs with the Euro with out, as far as I know, any problems.

The Suncoast is probably a "better" TC in the sense that it will probably stand more power than the CRD motor can safely put out and some really like the billet construction, don't ask me the details of why.

To be honest I have the Suncoast simply because they are close (3 hrs away) and would do the install with the full Transgo kit and a 2 year warranty for a price I considered reasonable.

If money is important the Euro is fine if money is not that important the Suncoast is better. As to money I've sent Corey an email because I'm not sure if his price includes the core charge or excludes the core charge so I don't know if the IDparts price is $467 or $567 in comparison with the Suncoast price of $695 plus a core charge. (UPDATE - see my later post in comparative pricing)

PS as far as I know the Suncoast can only be purchased direct from them. Installation is not something I wanted to tackle but I do know my local DCJ folks have installed Suncoast TCs on a few Dodge diesel trucks so they would have done my Jeep had I wished.
