Here in NJ we had a chilly 9 degree morning yesterday. My jeep failed to start or turnover with the cold. I had a feeling the battery did not have enough juice to crank the engine to get it started. After several attempts, I had jumped it with the help of my wife's car. After plenty of research on the forum, I read that most owners here are running on the Diehard Platinum battery from Sears. So, I figured that's the first thing to try. Low and behold, after purchasing/installing the battery, the Liberty never started better the following morning, with about an 11 degree morning. Thanks to all the previous posts and wealth of knowledge on the forum to help solve my problem.

Glad you got it up and running, if its below freezing I hope you are using the block heater too, It will greatly improve those cold starts.

Also might want to make sure your alternator is charging correctly, there is nothing worse than replacing a battery only to find it isn't being charged.

How can you check to see if the alternator is charging the battery properly?

Simple test is to use a DMM or Digital multi-meter with the engine running you should see approximately 14.5v when you test the battery voltage. Touch one lead to the positive terminal and one to the negative terminal. If you don't have a DMM I believe auto parts stores will test battery and alternator in the car for free.

Whatever battery you buy be sure it has a minimun or 800 Cold Cranking Amps. Thats the Jeep required CCA. I have a Advance Autoparts gold 800cca & 1000 ca above 30F. Good battery.

It's good to hear confirmation I'm not alone in finding answers here.

This is the time of year batteries die in droves. I, too, had to replace mine a few days ago, exactly 10 days after my "free replacement" warranty ran out. darn, how'd they do that?

Anyway, yep, it's certain: if they won't even crank, odds are your battery has bitten the big one.

+1 on the Sears P1. Just replaced it and never started better.
Expensive, but I don't fool around when it comes to batteries and cold temps.

Just to confirm, I needed a battery, and I found a 600 CCA battery almost new from a truck my parents were getting rid of. It works, but you're right. On our -2 degree day here in Michigan, it took longer to crank over. I am saving for the P1 because I know that I am adding work for my starter and plugs in this situation.
