Good off the shelf oil

I really am not trying to start another oil debate on whats better. But what is a good oil to use that is readily available off the shelf on major parts stores? I had been using Rotella T6 for a while, previously in my Subaru and now in the CRD because it was supposed to have alot of zinc, but I hear now that they reduced the zinc levels. Its obviously been colder so I am probably going to 0w-40. I am thinking of trying amsoil. But would rather buy something off the shelf.

I am going to try Amsoil 5W40 European Formula full SAPS (meaning it has all the additives). I talked to an Amsoil guy at the car show and it seems promising.

Stick with your T6 & buy a bottle of ZDDP to add to the oil. The ZDDP can be had at PepBoys, AutoZone, Kragen etc. I use Rizlone

That is what I was looking at from Amsoil as well, I have been a fan of the T6 and it is nice to go to Walmart and grab a jug of it for a reasonable price. My only issue with the T6 is that it gets very thick in the cold. This was a problem with my Subaru (No block heater), but not so much with the CRD since I always plug it in.

The Amsoil cost slightly more, but by the time I pay 10-12 dollars for a quart ZDDP its not a big deal.

I've never tried the Chevron stuff, but it seems like a good option.

Using the Bosch filter (which I am giving a try as of this last change) it is about a 7qt fill. According to the instructions on the Rislone zinc additive you are supposed to add 1qt per 5qts of oil. Are you just adding 1 qt additive to 6 qts of oil or are you adding a bit less oil and another small partial bottle of zinc additive? Also....what made you switch to the Chevron oil. Any chance the fact that the CRD doesn't have a DPF would cause any issues as it stated on the spec sheet that it was engineered for diesels with an EGR and a DPF?

Add the Rislone first. and 5.7 qt. of oil then check the dip stick, add more if needed.

According to the Chevron oil rep. there is no problem using it in our diesels. If you read the spec sheet it states the following "This product is recommended for use in older engines, as well as in today’s most modern low emission designs."

I decided to try it because my mechanic is using it in his diesel and swears by it.

I have used q8 5w40 synthetic in mine when specialist serviced.

My own oil changes have been a mixture of Chevron Supreme 10w40 semi synthetic.

Maxlife Diesel 10w40 Synth Blend.

And most recently 0w40 Mobil 1 New Life (SN).

It ran really well with the Q8 5w40 synth in it, though it had just had the cambelt, multibelt and idlers done!

Also seemed to run well on the Maxlife.

But it has used the least oil with Maxlife and Mobil 1 NL, though this may be due to the effects of the Maxlife, as the engine is a little wet down below.

With 180k I am not overly concerned, doesn't leave any drips.

It did when the specialists filter came loose!

Sorry don't know what make it was, wasn't a UK FRAM as they are white over here.

Due to the way it runs on Mobil 1 and the ease of finding it almost everywhere I would definately recommend that oil.

Will be checking the levels on Monday when I see the renter, but after 2k no oil use.

Can't say fairer than that with a high mileage engine.

And yes I have just touched wood!

I have looked into HDEO's and as CI 4 is a manufacturer oil spec I would say they are also a good bet if you can find them easily.

Shell Rimula and Delvac 1 SHC XP are on my radar.

I think full synth is the way to go with this engine.

Not getting into the PAO or Grp 3 debate.

But I would only use dino as an emergency top up to get me home then change out ASAP.
