I hope I'm posting this in the right place. If not, my apologies.

I bought a 2005 Liberty CRD last summer, with approximately 84,000 miles on it. I was hoping to get some decent fuel mileage out of it, but I seem to be lucky to get around 21mpg. Anyway, some stuff started happening with it last fall... like replacing the transmission (ouch!), rupturing the hose between the charger and intercooler, and about that time I did the ORM mod, disconnected the MAF sensor, and cleaned the MAP sensor. I thought those last three items would have shown some improvement to the mpg, but no such luck. Actually, about a week after cleaning the MAP sensor I started to experience an intermittent, completely random fit where I am trying to accelerate but all of a sudden there is a loss of power. The engine still runs, and transmission still works, but I could barely get the vehicle moving. I could put the pedal to the floor and the engine would rev to 3000 RPM, but would barely go, and would not shift until I let off the accelerator a certain amount. I could eventually work it up to highway speed but it would never go into overdrive during these fits. Eventually, it would clear up and start driving normal. At first I thought it was the replacement transmission, so I had the tranny repair guy look at it. He said the tranny was fine, but it was throwing CEL codes for the MAF and turbo. So I drove it for a couple months with it having these random fits, which kept getting more and more frequent, and trying to do some research but finding nothing. After going to a local auto parts store that will plug into the computer, they said it was throwing MAF and MAP codes. So, between me and my co-worker talking about it, I finally decided to try a new MAP sensor. Ordered it thru Summit Racing (best price I could find, and was recommended on LostJeeps forum). Well, I switched it out three days ago and have not experienced any more of those fits, so I am gonna say the problem is solved.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue, and thought maybe my experience could help out another unsuspecting CRD owner.

Also, I thought I would post the pics of my MAP sensor:

This is pre-cleaning of the MAP sensor, at approximately 85,000 miles. I am assuming previous owners never touched it.

This is comparing the new MAP sensor with the old one that was cleaned two months ago, approximately 5,000 miles ago.

I'm gonna guess the old sensor was either damaged by my attempt to clean it, or bad to begin with, but since it was so encrusted with soot/oil build-up, the computer may have been running off of a default setting. Either way, I figure once the sensor was cleaned up, it started sending faulty signals to the computer, which was playing havoc with my engine.

Any thoughts from the audience? :)

And, yes, there was that much build-up on the MAP sensor in approximately 5,000 miles, with MAF sensor unplugged, and ORM mod active.

I have not had that problem, But yes i have heard others have. Wow lots of soot. Dam EGR! Mine Gone.

So now your jeep is working fine, I was wondering about the MPG? as my MPG is low between 15-20, i have put new air filter new fuel filter and clean up of MAP, so only thing left to do is replace MAP and i i hope to get the MPG into 20-25 mark.thanks.

My driving is mostly back roads, hills, lots of stop & go's with moderate acceleration. I get 20+ MPG. When on the highway i try to keep the RPM at 2000 to get 30+ MPG.

I did have a emergency brake frozen, it caused my MPG to drop. I clean my MAP about every year. Fuel filter every 20 to 25k. Clean the K&N air filter every 5K with the 0w-40 oil change. Run 235-70-16 tires @ 34 psi. Add 1/2oz of Lubribor additive to every tank of fuel.

Last year i did have rocker failure. Installed all new. I did not closely check the MPG before and after the rocker change but for sure it gets better MPG and has more power now.

Seeing that there are guys out there getting worse mpg than me kinda makes me feel a little better about my Heep, but I still don't think it should be as low as 21 mpg, considering I drive a lot of highway miles between Decatur and Portland. That really stinks though for you guys getting worse than me.

I failed to disconnect the battery for a while when I put the new MAP sensor in. I plan on checking the mpg with this first tank of fuel on the new sensor, and then disconnecting the battery to reset the computer after I fill up the second tank. I'm kinda anxious to see the results.

Eventually, I want to try the GDE ecotune on the ECM. But until then, I'm gonna try out all the stuff I can do on my own. That darn transmission cost me over and above what I was going to invest in the tune.

I try to keep the jeep on cruise control on Hwy between 1800-2000 rpm never accelerate more than 2500 rpm yet MPG sucks changed fuel and air filters Map Sensor on the way.

I have a similar issue. I replaced the map sensor about 10 days ago with a new one but forgot to disconnect the battery. Shortly after I finally got the gde Eco tune. I assume that the ecu reflash will reset everything so I don't need to disconnect the battery. I'll update the post with the new mpg values once I get few hundred miles. Previously I had about 19 mpg city and hwy.

Regarding the gde Eco tune, I can see a huge difference on how the engine runs, both sound and responsiveness, so I highly recommend it.

Everytime I put money aside to get the GDE tune some random issues spring up first it was the transmission switch a 60 bucks parts stealer ship charged 150 and 2 hours of labour to take it to 400+ tax, then power steering hose sprang a leak and they wanted 450 for it plus 2 hours of labour , I found it online for 200 bucks paid 180 to local tech to install so if it holds good for a couple of months , I will get the GDE tune done .

My alternator has been chirping for a while, so I will probably invest in a new alternator before the GDE ecotune. But at 90,000 miles I'm also looking at changing the timing belt. So I'm thinking I'll tackle the alternator and timing belt at the same time, and then do the tune. Here's to hoping for a sizable tax return.

The first tank of gas after installing the new MAP sensor has not shown any signs of improvement in the fuel mileage -- barely made 21 mpg. I filled it up last night. Will disconnect the battery today to see if resetting the computer has any effect on the current tank's mileage.

I will admit that I have a tendency to overly enjoy the turbo when accelerating, so that could possibly contribute a tad to the mileage factor. :P

I drive upwards of 350 miles a day on occasion, through the PA mountains and on rural roads, and I get 22-24mpg in the winter and 25-27mpg in the warmer months. When I drive to points south (where it is flat), I get 27-30+mpg. I don't drive like an old man, but I don't beat on it (usually) either.

I thought I would give an update on the fuel mileage since installing the new MAP sensor. After resetting the computer by disconnecting the battery all night, I managed to pull 22 mpg. I also held back a little more on the foot feed. :-D That being said, I really don't know if resetting the computer had anything to do with it. Also, I didn't notice any change or rough running of the engine when I reconnected the battery and started the engine. I was thinking it might act a little funny, at least on the first start, but it started up and ran just like it never missed a beat. I'm still frustrated on the mileage thing.

Wanna trade ....lol .... I would love to get MPG in the range of 20-25 as right now i am getting 15-18. I cleaned old Map put new filters in and will replace the MAP too in the hope things improve other than MPG i love this tractor and turbo whistle....

Are you looking at the EVIC fuel monitor or are you calculating by hand?

I live near Nashville and before mine exploded I was getting 38 mpg on the EVIC but only about 30.5 mpg hand tallied.

I'm just saying....

When is the last time you changed your fuel filter? Have you checked the fuel head for leaks? Do you have a CEL when you plug the MAF sensor back in?

Sorry, Srytrucker, not willing to trade just yet. LOL I don't hear much of a turbo whistle with mine. Not sure if it's because of my own poor hearing or what.

I don't know what an EVIC fuel monitor is. I just figure it by hand when I fill the tank: miles on the odometer divided by gallons I just pumped in.

I have yet to change the fuel filter. I think that will be the next thing I do. Have not checked for leaks either. I've never noticed anything when I'm under the hood, but then I haven't actually looked for leaks on the fuel head either. I haven't plugged the MAF sensor back in either. Good point though. I should do that to make sure there are no other issues causing a CEL. Thanks, Hexus.
