So it's a little late, but I just noticed some glaring problems in the Jeep magazine for the month.

They list the Jeep Lineup in the back, here's what it says:

Jeep Liberty Limited, Sport, and CRD:
Additional Features:
- Standard Electronic Stability Program w/ ABS, traction control and Electronic Rollover Mitigation
- Five-star side crash test rating
- Trail Rated offroad capability
CRD Features:
- 5,000lbs of maximum trailer-towing capacity
- 34 percent better fuel economy
- Best-in-Class driving range: Over 500 miles to the tank

Jeep Liberty Renegade:
Additional Features:
- 5,000lbs of maximum trailer-towing capacity
- 9.5-in ground clearance (2WD) and 9.4-in (4WD)
- Choice of available part- and full-time 4x4 systems (4WD)
- 69 cu ft of cargo space with rear seats folded down
- Standard tow hooks, rock rails, and fog lamps

So basically, this is implying a lot of things:
#1, CRD provides 5000lbs of towing, but sport and limited don't. Not true, sport and limited both have the same towing capability as the CRD
#2, Renegade lists ground clearance like it's an advantage over the sport and limited - the Renegade actually has the LEAST ground clearance of any of the models (but that is because of the skids). 9.4 has always been a lie, 6.5 is the actual ground clearance.
#3, lists full- and part- time 4wd options. Pretty sure the renegade only comes with part-time, and in any case, that's a feature on the sport and limited as well.
#4, the sport and limited models list side crash ratings, abs, rollover rating and trail rating as "additional options" - but they are available on the renegade, too.

All very misleading. It's a good thing we have a site like LOST to set people straight on the specs...

I just wasn't sure if renegades had the option of selec-trac. I know renegades get a different command-trac than the other models (command-trac HD it says on the jeep site)

You'd think that out of all the mags out there that Jeep Mag would get it right........................

I have not personally seen a '05 or newer Renny that did not have select-trac. I do not know for sure if auto Renny's get the 241 t-case or not. I know that all of the 6-cyl., 6-spd KJ's (even the Sport models) get the 241. Its a heavier duty version of the 231, for all intents and purposes, and is the basis for the "command-trac HD" designation.

I am sure there are 6-spd Renny's and auto/command-trac Renny's out there, I have just not been able to find/inspect one.

Are you reffering to JP magazine? Perhaps they are just regurgatiating figures provided from another source. They SHOULD check them before printing, but very few mags have the integrity to go to that trouble anymore.

I have a 2005 Renegade with the HD Command Track. I went through the available options and selected everything I had to have and then made my dealership go find one from another dealer, as I didn't want to wait to order one last spring.

Our 06 Renegade has the auto and the command-trac. You can only get the HD on stick models.

Oh, that's what it was, then. I have the 6-speed with "HD", I guess.

I have one. How can I inspect mine for the 241 t-case? Any label or special shape?

Well the thing is, the magazine is not technially "wrong". For instance, on the Renegade it lists 69 cu. ft. of cargo space as a feature. It doesn't list this for the other models. Does that mean the other models don't have as much space? Of course not.

They would only be "wrong" if they said the other models do not have as much space. Simply not mentioning it is their freedom to list other features that highlight each model.

I do see what you are saying though and it is annoying that they don't go ahead and list the same features for each model repeatedly just to be sure everyone understands.

That are listed under "Additional Features" which implies that they are in addition to the normal features. If they just said "features" or nothing at all, it would have been better.

It seems to me like it would have been in their best interest to actually list the real differences between the models to entice the buyer. or at least list them in their "default" configuration (like, renegade is more likely to have skids, limited is more likely to have leather)

Renegade: 160Amp Alternator (136Amp in Sport Limited), bumper-mount fogs, "bolt-on" fender flares
Limited: Chrome accents, leather, EVIC
Sport: El Cheapo

But some just don't make sense. If you are going to make a separate section for CRD, why put things in it that aren't unique to the CRD? There are plenty of great things about the CRD, saying "5000lb towing" is not important, since all liberties have that (except mine).

Jeep Mag should get it right .................but

A good sourse for info on any vehicle (any year too) is cars.com.....................It lists all the models and the "standard equipment" for all models............Then you select "optional equipment" and it gives you the different options that come with the different option packages. Also gives you prices and basic tech info on engine, tranny, etc and much much more. Try it - you'll like it.

Very useful site for researching both new and used vehicles of all brands. (I'm sure there's other sites too - in addition to the D/C Jeep web site)

The thing is that you could go to a dealer and order a Renny with options that you would get on a Limited or visa-versa that the dealers would not have on the lot.

Better than most, but still innaccurate. For example, I looked up the 2005 renegade and found that they don't list a manual transmission at all, they don't list command-trac as available, and they show 235/70R16 tires as standard, when they are an option in the offroad group (or by themselves). Also, they only list 3.73 as the axle ratio, 3.55 is not even listed.

I agree about dealers not having things on the lot. Even what Jeep says is "Standard" and "Optional" is not necessarily what is available. Dealers purchase whatever option packages they want, and if most decide to order automatic, no luxury package, no abs, that ends up being the new "standard", even though jeep says otherwise.

Crawl under your KJ on the driver's side about where the two doors meet. On the back of the x-fer will be a gear-shaped silver and red tag. It will say "np 241 j" or something like that if it is a 241. 231 will obviously say "np231 j" or the like.

Post your findings.... :D

Well, I have the " np231J " t-case in my 2005 Renegade 4x4, auto, command-trac, & tow package.

What is this telling us? Is this a $$ cut-back on DC's part?

Chris
