Nothing as exciting as new socks in my life, but welcome. How many years do you have in? I was a puddle jumper, myself... 25 years (like that check every month).

It'll be 4 years in June. I honestly have no reason to get out. I have no idea what I would want to do in the outside world and it's just too easy being told "go here, do this, and we'll pay you."

Good for you, the time does fly by. And, where else do they pay you to see the world?

My best advice that I can think of, if you want it, would be to start a path towards a commission. It's not easy but it'll be worth it, especially when you're done. Your pension will be about double. The officers don't have it all that bad either. That's the direction I started but for some reason I got out. I really can't say for sure why but I wish I hadn't. :2cents:

well the nice thing is I've gone to 3 schools now that I could very easily use in the outside world if something were to happen and I would get out. I've been a painter, liquid oxygen technician, and now I'm HVAC qualified. So in a way I do have a back up. But other than stupidity I don't see myself getting out. As far as the officer route...I couldn't do it. I find the best way to deal with stress is to laugh it off and joke around with people you work with. Being an officer you just have to be serious all the time. The pay check wouldn't be bad though.

Arctic_Libby, Welcome to the forum.
My step dad was a 25 year Navy guy, never went for a commission, but loved the travel and life of a Sailor. After he got out he bought 5 acres and built a house, while he worked for the forestry Dept. as a surveyors assistant. Then scaled log trucks for about 10 years. Now he is collecting his pension, civilian retirement, and S.S. He has a very comfortable life with no $, or health care $ concerns. It's a pretty nice deal.
------------------------------------------------------------

I have the first coat of primer on the bottom of the rack. It turned out well, but took forever to cure because of the cold. It is also very odorous and stunk up the whole house, even with the garage man-door closed. I had the garage roll-up door partially open for 2 days trying to get the garage vented. This was 4 days ago and it still stinks a little.

Anyway, here are the progress Pics as promised.

I used almost 1 complete can on the bottom.

Now to flip it over and do the top side.

Scar0, thanks for the update. I'm still waiting for good enough weather to paint mine (no garage), but I'm following your progress as a guide to how I should prep and paint my galvi crossbars.

Your welcome. Hope it helps some others as well. 8)
I did the top side today. My garage is not heated so I heat it up with a Kerosene heater to about 65-70 then I turn off the heater and wait for the heater to cool off. Then I hit the rack with the primer. Let cure for about 30-45 minutes and open the roll-up door partially. Place a fan at the opposite side and blow in fresh air. The smell goes out the top and other side of the door.
Ideally I would wait till summer to do this outdoors, but I just couldn't wait.

I also just ordered a new addition for my welder.
I ordered the MIG conversion kit, so now my welds will be much cleaner in the future.
I have a Lincoln Electric 100 Weld Pak -HD wire feed welder, which does a good job with the flux-core wire. But the flux-core wire tends to create a lot of splatter which is a pain to clean off. I used the flux core to make the rack, and the trailer frame for a camper I am building. It did a pretty good job with most of that. But I had to have the axle welded at a shop, the metal was just to thick...
Once I get the MIG conversion it will use a shielding gas to produce cleaner welds.
Can't wait for it to get here...

Little update. I decided to go with the Rustoleum Pro, stainless steel colored, high performance enamel paint.
First coat went on today. Was planning on 4 coats.
Will follow up with Pic on Wed.

When I went to Walmart this morning, another black KK caught my eye, so I just had to park next to it. :seuss:

Good catch Gageraid. Can't find any rig that is "Khaki" in my area. lol
Sorry I haven't posted Pics of the rack as promised. Life got in the way of my progress, and then the weather...
I do have 2 coats of paint on the rack now, but sill need two more at least. The Rustoleum is very thin and takes forever to buildup. I may just go with 6 coats to make it nice and thick.

Usually when I see a black KK it is a Limited and not a Sport.

Just a month and a half, or so later...
Life got in the way of me finishing the rack. My mom needed me to do some work for her, then I had to plant some trees, so it pretty much occupied my time until today.
Since the rack was painted, and the lights were off of it, I figured it was a good time to do a little Plasti-Dip on the bottom edge of the lights. You see, when I had the lights "On" the bottom edge of the lens would allow light to glare too close to the rig. So by adding a little Plasti-Dip along the bottom edge it creates a cut-off line and shines the light out in the field without the glare I had before. So I taped them off and sprayed away...

Image

Because the Plasti-Dip does not stick well to glass, I used a razor to cut along the tape to prevent it from pealing off. Now they look like this.

Image

When I took the rack off, I left the flat bars on. I forgot to take the nuts and washers off the roof when I did this. Believe it or not, they were still all in the rails when I went to reinstall the rack today. I got lucky there.

And finally here is the reveal of the New Stainless painted rack.... Drum roll please!

Image

The rig looks the way it should again.
Hopefully, with all the Prep I did this time around the paint will last more then a year, and actually stick to the Galvi pipes.

Hi all from northern Indiana, new to the forum but not to jeeps. Looking to buy #7. Currently have a 2011 Patriot which I’m giving to my daughter to get her through college. We’re looking at 2010 Libertys to use as a family truckster, haven’t owned a Liberty yet but it reminds me of a shortened version of a Commander which I loved.
Anybody know of anything I need to watch out for in buying one or any reason I should look else where?

Kent
