For the past month been having whiteish smoke smelling like unburned diesel coming out the tailpipe, for about the first 10 seconds or so. Been about 20 to 35 degrees when starting it. Could it be my injectors? have not checked intake tube to turbo and do not have the orm or any other mods other then no muffler. The rig has 130k on it. Since i have owned it 6k ago. I have changed the oil with 5w40. Im thinking Injectors what does everyone else thing? next time it is in the shop im going to check for shaft play in the turbo and check out the intake tube. I do know before i bought it the egr system was completely cleaned out.

A old lady owned it before me and the owner before her clearly towed with it (has brake controller and rear spring isolators to keep her from sagging)

How are your glow plugs? Hard starting? Any skip when it starts? Just a thought, maybe a bad glow plug, and raw fuel is going into the exhaust from it not firing for a few revs. Just a guess on my part.

Perhaps your CRD is catholic, and trying to participate in electing the new pope?

More likely - It is friggin COLD out, and the engine isn't warmed enough to properly combust the diesel in the first few minutes. Completely normal.
Want to prove this theory? Get a heavy outdoor timer (Walmart has them for about $20) and plug the CRD in, with the timer set to 2 hours before you plan to leave in the cold morning. It shouldn't smoke. Side benefit: You get warm interior air before hitting the end of your driveway.

I had really hard starts any where below this temp. My block heater cable is bad so instead i bought a pan heater which i like a lot more. I will experiment tonight and see if it still smokes on initial startup even when warm. I do know when warm it will puff coal and when i hammer on it she will roal coal pretty good.

We are having the same issue with our 2005. Only thing different is the amount of time the smoke last. Ours has been lasting until the coolant gauge gets to the first quarter mark. Any ideas? Hopefully both of us get info on this. :)

Black smoke from a CRD at any point means only one thing: Too much fuel and not enough air.

As this is a VERY computer controlled motor, you shouldn't be seeing black smoke EVER. Remove and fully check (by pressing and probing with gloved fingers) BOTH intercooler hoses. You cannot check them accurately while they are installed. Look for holes and soft places that are usually on the underside of the hose. If the hose is coated in filth, this is because the oil from the CCV is being forced THROUGH the walls of the hose by the boost pressure. The hose rots from the inside out, and becomes one giant porous mess until it finally fails entirely. Clean the MAP sensor if you haven't, if only because it is a good idea. Usually a gummy map sensor leads to LESS boost however, not lost boost and too much fuel.

Boost leaking out can (and does) reduce the air charge and causes smoke... Which is simply your money wasting itself out the tailpipe.

Take the opportunity while you have the hoses off, to unscrew the disc in the center of the air path in the FCV - Diesels don't need a throttle plate, and WHEN this useless device fails, it can choke off your intake, robbing you of even more power. You will also want to remove the airbox-to-turbo hose and replace this if (when) it is a gooey mess at the turbo end. The oil from the CCV rots this hose first. $55 dealer-only item, and take the opportunity to install an Elephant Hose Mod and plug that side hole in the airbox hose with a cork from your favorite vintage.

Its not blueish, its white and smells like fuel. Ours started when we lost number 2 and 3 glow plugs about a month and a half ago. I dont think its the head gasket as it dont loose much coolant since we removed and blocked the egr and cooler. I dont know though.

Mine does what yours is doing when you rev it at idle smokes out the area for about 30 seconds. Mine however i will never ever rev with a cold start up (sounded like yours was cold). I also have a 3 inch tip out the back so it throws it more out and about instead of down into the ground. Pretty good reference to color, but has a more blue tint to it.
