Here's a sound clip of my open exhaust with side exit to add to this site's information:

Seems to be a much deeper sound but still not to loud. What does it sound like at WOT? I'm thinking of doing the cherry bomb or straight pipe. With the side exit and straight through do you find that you get any droning?

At WOT it has a growling sound, but quieter than I expected. It's never really loud, just more noticeable. I was afraid it would sound like a sport compact car but it doesn't. I put 1000 miles on the Jeep this weekend on a trip to East Tennessee. There was no droning. At highway speeds it is quieter than the sound clip.

I'd read several reports on the internet of droning with the muffler removed. My guess is the long exhaust from converter to tailpipe resonates lower (droning) frequencies than the short side exit.

Now that I've decided I'm going to stay with the open exhaust and side exit I'm replacing the flex pipe with 2.5" mandrel-bent pipe. If the pipe creates any different sounds I'll report it.

BTW, the sound was recorded from the passenger seat with the window down.

What route did you take ?
I'd enjoyed hearing a straight-piped CRD.

Thanks for the soundclip, I always wanted to hear that. I am still debating on wether I get straight pipe or a glasspack.
Would be nice to hear the sound recorded directly next to the exhaust.

With the muffler there is less growl. I also sent you a PM.

That sounds great to me, hard to believe that an engine that small could sound that deep. I might just have to head to muffler shop sooner than later. Thanks for the clip.

I haven't noticed any difference in mpg or power compared to the Magnaflow muffler, but getting rid of the stock muffler made a big difference. It drives much better and I've gained 1.5-2 mpg.

The main reason I took the Magnaflow muffler off was because it made it easier to cobble up the side exit exhaust with the supplies I had...and because I just wanted to see what it would be like.

I ordered a couple pieces of mandrel-bent 2 1/2" exhaust pipe from Summit Racing as no one around here does that. The pipe fits perfectly into the Magnaflow muffler pipe, as does the catalytic converter pipe. When I start assembling the final exhaust system it might be easier for me to use the muffler to connect everything. If I do, I'll record it for a comparison to the open exhaust.

Stan,

Is that without muffler and cat, or just without muffler?

If it is without cat too, do you have any problems with exhaust fumes when stationary?

I'd love to see some pics!!!

The converter is still there. I have currently have flexipipe from the converter to the tip. I'll see about some pictures.

Stan,

So you have stock back to the cat, and then a 2.5" pipe going back from the cat and kicking out under the framerail in front of the rear tire, or how is it run?

Pics would be great...

Yes, that's how it is. I have flexipipe from the converter to the exhaust tip. I will eventually replace it with mandrel bent tubing (been backordered for two months). I'll try to get some pictures tonight.
