So here this summer sometime I will be looking into an on board air compressor. Don't really have any experience with these and couldn't find to much info else where. My question is what can I expect out of a decent unit will it run an impact wrench? I mostly want one for tires being able to inflate once I deflate going off road, but also might consider lockers in the future. Suggestions thought ? Where do most people mount them on a KJ?

I was checkin that one out too seems like a good product as are most ARB items. I wonder if there is a difference in power with the portable vs on board.

Looks like there are a lot of posts on here regarding it.

That is one I found. (I find it's easier to GOOGLE search the stuff for lost than it is to use the search function on the actual board :-)r )

Nice there was some good info there. Honestly looks like a Power Tank is the way to go, have to look into both options more. Anybody have experience with either one please feel free to chime in and share your thoughts.

Be hard to find a on board air system that would run air tools on an ongoing basis
CO2 works great for it though
I'm running a 15 lb

I ran an ARB pump on my 52 Jeep when I had it. I found the only way to get enough air out of it though for air tools was to run a tank. I was also running 35" tires and it was taking 6 minutes per tire to go from 16 PSI to 32 PSI with that big of a tire. I ended up using my front bumper as the airtank. Not sure how legal it was but it worked great. I ran a 4"x6" short bumper with a winch plate. I capped the ends and welded everything. I added the air fittings and was able to pressureize it to about 130 PSI and could inflate all of my tires in a few minutes.

The pump itself was a great pump. I would definately buy another one.

for occasional offroad the Superflow MV50/Masterflow 1050 is hard to beat - it's cheap ~ $60 and works well

however if you'd get into heavy usage - a CO2 tank of some sort - beats all the compressors.
(the Powertank guys can run air tools off of theirs - but they pay a lot for it )

I disagree I run a 3/8 impact with my ARB twin set up air up my tires just fine also. But I also have the ARB air tank to help it out. I am currently hunting for a larger flat air tank to add some more capacity.

C02 is the way to go in my opinion if you have easy access to refills (Airgas stores are everywhere).
You will fill up your tires extremely fast compared to an on board compressor. It is a simple, dependable setup.

Powertank is a sweet setup but it is to spendy in my opinion, Just by an aluminum tank and find a regulator, then get cheap air hose and fittings from harbor freight and your done for less than 200 bucks, probably around 150.00 if you shop around.

Here is all the info you need.

The only other option I would go with is the belt driven setup where you swap out your A/C compressor.

Why would you do the AC compressor swap I don't know about y'all I drive mine daily. I also like being able to run mine with the vehicle off. Also mine will never lock down and kill my motor. I thought about a power tank to run my lockers and air up but then realized for all I would spend more through power tank then current set up. I got my twin aire for 495 two years thought quadratec during their christmas sale

I had a Viair 450, I think, 100% duty mounted in my old Rubicon with a 3 gallon tank. It did fine airing up tires but was slow. I now have it mounting in a tool box because my CRD has no engine room to mount it there. I hook it up to the battery when needed. The electric compressors will not compete with the CO2 tanks but you wont run out of air unless your battery dies. I spend about 15 minutes airing up the 245/75 tires back up to par on the CRD. One day I will mount one of the many CO2 tanks I have. Being in the bar business helps having easy access to tanks and air. I just trade them out with the liquor distributor.
I would suggest anyone thinking about purchasing a tank to check local liquor distributors for them if you don't want to buy one. Usually it is a $100 deposit plus around $13 for air. When done just take it back to get your deposit back.

Found a sweet deal on 2 - 5lb co2 tanks for 50 bucks brand new on Craigslist. Gonna order the new adjustable regulator from The Source along with a hose and ill have a pretty good set up and be able to have a back up tank!
