Hissing after spool up? Boost leak...fixed

Ok, ever since I got it running, I've got this hissing sound after the turbo spools. It runs good but I feel it should be better. It almost sounds like the exhaust is plugged, but i believe the cat has been gutted so it really cant be exhaust, or its leaking boost somewhere. But like I said it does run good. Ive never experienced a boost leak so that may be what it is, I don't know? When I accelerate from a stop or cruising, I can hear it spool up nicely for a few seconds, then just turns into this hissing sound. Is it possible to be leaking boost from the PITA egr tube/clamp that connects to the throttle body? I know this gave me fits getting it hooked back up after the rocker/cam replacement..... thanks again for any help and or pointers!!

Sounds like a turbo/CAC hose. Check both turbo-intercooler and intercooler-intake hoses. While you are at it, check the filter box-turbo hose. Those are prone to splitting at the bottom. Good luck.

You have a boost leak somewhere. It may be helpful to try pressurizing the intake manually to look for the leak.

I would try connecting the outlet of a shop vac to the intercooler intake (bypass turbo) and filter it with a t-shirt or something just in case. Then start feeling around for air leaking everywhere in the rest of the intake path. Obviously do this with the engine off.

The only other thing I could suggest is having someone else hold the thing in gear at 1500-2000 rpm while you feel around, but that is potentially dangerous.

Also, if your leak isn't at the hoses, chect the top left side (Facing the engine bay) of your intercooler. They are known to crack there where the plastic meets the aluminum (so to speak) you will note discoloration and some gunk buildup if it's leaking there.

Mine did that after I had the timing belt (and a few other things) replaced. I found the mechanic missed the hose when tightening the clap on the output of the turbo. Took me about 15 minutes to correct it as soon as I found the right tools.

The CAC and airbox to turbo hoses are relatively easy to not seat correctly especially on the plastic fittings. When installing they need to be fully pushed onto the fitting, in the case of the airbox to turbo hose that means touching the MAF sensor; the clamp needs to be fully on the fitting not the raised lip of the fitting (IMHO just behind that lip is good); and they need to be tighted snug no godzilla or you will crush the plastic fitting. Drive for a few days/miles and recheck clamp tightness.

If not leaky hoses/hose fittings follow other posted suggestions.

I did the shop vac trick and found just what I expected. The dang clamp on the egr tube under the throttle body. I'm working on it now but can't seem to get the rigid tube quite square so the clamp will clamp properly. I got a new clamp too.

It will be a pain, but loosen the intake elbow bolts first, then tighten that collar up, THEN tighten the intake elbow again.

Or you could just... you know... block that pipe entirely.

I know I know........ sometime I will. But for now I'm just getting it running, better, anyhow. Remember that I've only had it on the road less than 2 weeks, and owned it a month now!

I got the clamp on and all is well! I can actually hear the turbo now. Although it's nowhere near as sweet a sound as the big one on my Cummins...... :jester:

Good that you got it fixed. It sounds so small compared to the Cummins because it is a teeny tiny little hairdryer.

Enjoy it, but don't beat on it. Chrysler engineered this entire thing too close to the safety limits for my comfort. Apparently what kills them is actually using your right foot and discovering what the floor feels like under that pedal.

With a GDE tune you will hear the turbo more. I get my Malone tune for my TDI in the AM.
