After doing the timing belt service, I flushed the coolant and replaced with 7 qts of Zerex and distilled water, as per CATCRD's advice. After two weeks, I figure it has fully mixed by now. The color in the header tank is VERY pale compared to the OEM MOPAR, so I bought an inexpensive PEAK tester, but it is unclear whether it is accurate with HOAT. The tester indicated it is good to -45F.

Any thoughts?

The FSM and Owner's manuals are a bit murky on the full fill capacity of the CRD coolant system. My personal opinion is the L figure is correct and that DCJ botched the metric to English conversion and that the English capacity is actually 13.2 qts hence 6.6 qts of Xerex G-05 would be a 50/50 mix which the product sheet (http://www.valvoline.com/products/brand ... ifreeze/42) says is good down to -34F. You have put in a bit more than 6.6qts so I'd expect protection to read a bit lower and -45F would be in the reasonable range for that "bit lower".

Unmixed Xerex G-05 is very pale and mixed it's even paler so I would not worry about color in your case.

I recall the new zerex being very pale compared to the OEM coolant, which had taken a darker tinge after 50k. Mine also tested fine with the cheap tester, fwiw.

I was informed by Valvoline that the Xrex formulation is clear, a dye is put into the mix when requested by the buyer.... and more often it is a pink colored dye.

I use the same stuff that I have used in my big diesels. Either Delo Nitrite Free ELC, Final Charge ELC, or Detroit Diesel nitrite free ELC. All the same red colored product. Since the CRD is a wet sleeve engine just like my Detroit 60 and previous Cummins ISX, then it only seemed right to use a product that is designed with prevention of wet sleeve cavitation in mind. And is a great product at providing superior water pump lubrication also. It has a 600,000 mile change interval life in heavy duty diesel engines. No need to use SCA additives or check for that. Just an annual check for freeze point protection. No conflict with aluminum or iron in the engine or copper/lead in the cores. Neat, easy, and the best protection a wet sleeved diesel can have. This is the approved type of coolant recommended for wet sleeved diesels by the Technology and Maintenance Council, which is the de facto standards committee on fleet vehicles with smaller diesels and heavy commercial diesels in N. America. I get the stuff in 1 gallon jugs, pre-mixed 50/50. Not into guessing what might be best to use. The testing has already been done. No brainer.
