We had a customer send us his oil sample history before and after installing a GDE tune. The improvement in oil quality is dramatic with soot being reduced from an average of 223 particles/milliliter down to 9 particles/millimeter. The analysis with the GDE full torque eco tune was completed at 5500 miles and at 12000 miles on same oil and the soot remained low. See the attached link below to see the full analysis.

GDE tunes are designed with engine health and efficiency in mind and are well worth the investment for preventive maintenance. A good investment will pay for its cost over time and then some. We accomplish this with the gains in fuel efficiency. The return on investment in fuel savings at $4/gal is about 27,000 miles.

Nice to know although it may be only me but I would not go with the extended oil change interval.

Does anyone have a good recommendation for the minimum zinc and phosphorus level as a basis for changing the oil? The sample had 1537 ppm zinc after 5500 miles and 838 after 12,000 miles. The phosphorus was at 1286 ppm at 5500 miles and 722 after 12,000 miles.

Thanks for sharing.

It's nice to see some real measurements to back up what many of us have already observed - visibly cleaner oil!

Oil analysis has proven over and over that if your EGR is disabled, changing the oil at 6000 mi is just wasting time and money. 10k is no sweat for a CRD engine in good repair. I don't like wasting money, and I don't like the dry start after every time you change the oil.

Zinc and phosphorus levels rarely are an indication to change oil. They don't really change a whole lot over the life of the oil. According to Oil Analyzers Inc., TBN depletion is the primary factor when the oil has to be changed.

I can't think why those two elements would ever decrease over the course of an interval unless the owner was topping off with the wrong type of oil which was lower in those elements. They are just not consumed by an engine.

I've been using a 10K interval for a long time. Good UOA's, though, I haven't done one in a while. Low zinc (and probably phos) is from the stupid emissions necessitated CJ-4 oils out now. Solution for me is to use older CI-4+. I just bought a 55 gallon drum of Delo for my two Cummins as well as my family's 8 other diesels. Keith has finally given me the info I have been looking for ( another post) that 15-40 is OK in the Libby. So I'm going to swap to CI-4+ 15 40 at the next oil change. Another option if you can't find CI-4+ is use ZDDP additive.

Okay, I have a SEGR so the EGR is disabled. Then why is my oil still so black and sooty with just a thousand miles or so? Could the EGR have been disabled in the "on" position? SEGR has been in and working well for years!

EGR is not the only reason for soot formation in the oil. Soot formation is more contingent on the combustion flame front and how complete the combustion is. Even with SEGR you are not solving the entire issue. Start of ignition is very important to have complete combustion and minimize soot.

Whoa! I ran about 20 K miles with SEGR and an IM SII tune before GDE came on the scene. My oil did not start staying pretty clean after changes until another 10K of running GDE tunes. I thought it just "took a while" to clean it out.

I do not tbink we bave asked the question as to whether people running just SEGR go 2-3 K after changes before their oil turns opaque black.

Yet another reason a GDE tune should be considered essential when running a NA spec KJ CRD.

I believe this. I have seen my oil stay cleaner after I got the Eco tune and did my first oil change. I have to look back at the history of when I did my first oil analysis and when I got my tune but I remember the last one there were comments about how the oil was much cleaner that time around. I'm sure the first was done pre tune I also have a sample sitting from my last oil change I need to cart off to the post my office. I can post my next report here for you all to see.

I also don't think I seen a huge difference right away in the oil. I mean it used to be as soon as you drove around the block the oil was black on the stick again. about the second oil change after the tune I noticed it really started staying cleaner much longer. So it must take a bit to flush the pre tune gunk out.

It took 3 oil changes to get my oil looking cleaner after the GDE tune and EGR removal. I also went to 5k oil changes.

I have driven about 11,000 miles and 2 oil changes since uploading the GDE ECO tune.
Change 1 when I purchased the Jeep to know it had the correct oil, change 2 after about 3, 000 miles just to get maintenance in sync with the factory recommended mileage cycle. Change 1 got black in just a few hundred miles. Change two stayed relatively clean for about 2,000 miles. The current fill is approaching 6,000 miles and is dark golden but still transparent - you can see through the oil to the dipstick surface.
Rotella T6 has been my oil of choice.
