Lol, to continue your rant, soon, in the name of public safety, our constitution will be re-written and we'll be all obediant, non-bullying safe entities...

The Pinto met the safety standards when they were built too...

I can understand the argument that very little can be done to protect a fuel tank against a high speed impact such as on the side of a freeway. I don't think that NHTSA is only looking at 50+ mph impacts however, I think they are picking out a flaw in this design that is somewhat obvious, even for low speed impacts: if a smaller vehicle hits it, it will miss the higher bumper and slide under the back. True enough, a stamped steel tank (or a 3ml skid) won't perfectly protect either... But they obviously found a significant number of instances to warrant ordering a recall at all.

Chrysler may be in the legal right in refusing the recall for such old vehicles... But for only 300 million, they are incurring a big PR hit at a time when they can least afford it.

The 300 million is also only a projection, how many of those older ZJ body are still on the road? My 1997 GC has 250k miles, and is barely on the road. They weren't the most reliable design to begin with. I think the costs are being overblown, just because Fiat doesn't want to accept ANY liabilities for former Mopar products. Not a good play, I think.

i was talking with my brother in law last night trying to figer out what they could possibly do he sugested they may have to replcase the jeeps i would not want to give up my jeep. i find the solution of putting a skid on funny since most of us on here have the skid already on it.

Looks like they've had a change of heart.

The official fix?

"Chrysler said Tuesday that dealers will inspect the vehicles and install trailer hitches to protect the gas tanks. The company said vehicles without hitches will get them, as will those with broken hitches or hitches that are not from Chrysler."

When asked if they were going to cover the Liberty CRD model under this recall the Chrysler spokesperson replied "What diesel? We never made a diesel model!" :ROTFL:

It'll take more than a free hitch to fix their reputation with me.

LMAO! :ROTFL: That statement just makes you have to shake your head and wonder about the powers that be. That statement is truly amazing.....and not in a good way.

I find it kind of odd that all this safety issues for relatively old cars (GC is 10-20 years old -wonder how come nobody noticed the issues before) were discovered exactly when fiat planned to acquire the rest of chrysler... wonder if it isn't some sort of political warning... lol. Like "play nice or we'll screw you up".

Also, why the cherokee isn't included in the recall? What makes that gas tank better than a libertys or grand cherokee's?

I installed a hitch last year, might just take it off and take it to the dealer. Doubt they will be adding the wiring for free.

It only took 7 years to figure this out? Maybe I should be suing the NHTSB?

They still have not dealt with the window regulator issue. :furious:

Two Libby's 02 and 07 and 9 regulators later and now the gas tank will burst into flames?

Okay this truly must be a Jeep thing because now I don't understand why I wouldn't drive anything but a Jeep :banghead:

I am imagining that there are a few high wigs getting pissed off at Chrysler for pulling ahead these days. And also they don't like Marchione or the Eyetalians moving into their territory.

Sit at the easy chair and enjoy the show.

This recall maybe the most inexpensive way to get into the act.

GC diesel is due to come out real soon.
