Trouble checking codes when the CEL is on?

Anyone else have trouble checking the codes via the odometer when the CEL is on? When it's off, I can check and get the 'done', so I know it works. But when its on, I can't get a darn thing except the mileage. Anyone else have this?

For some reason I can't always get the key to to work consistantly eithor.

How do you do the test to pull the codes? I can't find how to do in on the CD.
