I was wondering how you all went about mounting your roof tires?

I had to take off my spare this last weekend when wheeling with Sapien and Eddo. Eddo thought it would be the better than a bent tailgate.

Have you had any problems with it up there?

What did you all do with the current wholes and stuff in the tail gate?

Have you had any problems getting a flat in the middle of a trail where you couldn't get your spare with it up there?

I was wondering how you all went about mounting your roof tires? I have a Garvin Industries Wilderness roof rack with spare tire mount.

I had to take off my spare this last weekend when wheeling with Sapien and Eddo. Eddo thought it would be the better than a bent tailgate.

Have you had any problems with it up there? none so far.

What did you all do with the current wholes and stuff in the tail gate? I had the spare tire mount replaced with a jerry can mount.

Have you had any problems getting a flat in the middle of a trail where you couldn't get your spare with it up there? I have not had a flat yet, thankfully.

Never put PowerTrax NoSlip with a Manual KJ. thanks for the advice/tip.

Haven't done it on my KJ, but on my XJ I just strapped my 30x9.50 spare to my Surco rack with 5 thick black rubber shock cords, kind of like giant bungee cords, that I bought at Home Depot. Never had a problem over 100k miles, offroad or even in an accident. I would make sure you can get it on and off-- Its pretty heavy and awkward.

My overhead rack has plenty of cross pieces. And I never did like the cost of wheel tie downs that I have seen for sale.

I used a common J-hook from a hardware store. A large, one with a long enough threaded side to reach up though the wheel and get a large washer and nut onto it. On the hook end I dipped it in that solution that's sold for plastic coating hand tools. The washer is one of those heaver steel plates that are used to anchors framing to cement floors. The nut is a large wingnut.

Works great and never shook loose even under tough Moab trail conditions. Cost about $7.

Used the same setup, only on a smaller scale for my hilift jack mount.

What exactly was the situation you were in the required you removing your spare tire? I've always wondered why people took them off and put them up on the roof.

Because it looks cool. :-)r

But if you look at my avatar and imagine how close my rear tire would have come to the slick rock...for example.

Just that pic series. There was some video shot of Roachman and JJ crossing it and its on the Moab DVD.

There were other equally steep spots at Moab.

So anyway, here's my pics of what happened with Charles the other day...

Image
Going up...

Image
Posing for a pic...

Image
Coming down...

Image
Getting stuck...

Image
A good push from behind, and the Jeep was moving again...

Image
Hmmm... will the rear bumper make it?

Image
Yup, but the spare tire wont...

Image
Only an inch of clearance, and the back wheels are about a half inch from sliding the rest of the way down and the spare tire would have cought on the rocks... so...

Image
Presto! 8)

I mentioned somewhere else that I did not like the price or solutions to the wheel tie downs, so I decided to figure ut my own. Basically its a J-hooked, 1/2" x 6" I recall, a heavy washer and a wing nut. The hook portion was dipped in that plastic goop that is made for coating tool handles and protects the rack from scratches. Thread the hook over a cross member on your rack and put the shaft up though the wheel's center and then clamp it all down. Sure does hold it in place just fine.

Here's a pic of the stuff

I put mine on top because of an idiot the parked too close at Walmart...

Pushed in the tailgate at the bottom of the mount.

So, I had the Tailgate dent fixed, removed the mount and had the holes filled in for a smooth tailgate. Frismanis in TX made me a copy of the garvin tire mount for my rack.
