When I just installed resistor blower for Hvac and hooked up neg battery and started up my high speed fan for radiator came on full blast. Never notice it when my jeep heats up on freeway like 3/4 or more. Could there be something not hooked up when dealership did timing belt job? Does not seem to work like most cars I have owned. On bmw I ran wires to switch near shifter and could turn it on when ever I wanted. Wonder if we could do same for CRD. Any relay's or something to investigate

If your Jeep heats up to 3/4 - I'd bet the coolant is low - they might not have burped the bubble out or the radiator's blocked need to check it - that's way too hot shouldn't be over 1/2 unless you're towing or climbing mountain passes

Fans - the Electric fan on the front is to push air through the AC condenser - and since you probably had the AC on - it turned on.

the mechanical fan clutch between radiator and engine should lock up at ~200F air temp - OEM clutch - or 175F air temp Hayden replacement.
since that's the air coming off of the radiator - 200F is way too late even if it really works - Hayden is better

Yes 3/4 is WAY TOO HOT, and if you don't do something about it RIGHT NOW then I expect to see a post from you about a "blown head gasket" very shortly.

Did they replace the Thermostat when they did your timing belt? Water Pump?

Do you have the original (most likely has failed) fan clutch on there?

I understand (and I'm not just talking to you here) that people have monetary responsibilities, but if you own one of these CRD's and you skimp or skip any part of maintenance or the known issues with them, it can be EXTREMELY costly!

2005 crd without reflash for temp, new hayden clutch,new thermo installed yesterday Crown part number might be first with it. I did have brown spackle plug up heater core and flushed it out. Ran simpler flush fluids through system spent much time trying to get it perfect. Any way to test water pump pressure, when I did do thermostat I noticed no fluid in block. If I bleed down radiator there should still be some there I would think.


Highspeed electric fan should still come on at 3/4 right?

Do you have pressure under the cap at any time?

I don't think the electric fan gets any input from the coolant temp, it's on/off is a function of AC line pressures.
(not certain about it - there is a signal from the PCM)

The mechanical fan is for engine cooling and it's not a direct connection - it's a function of air temp causing the fan clutch to lock up.

The coolant does have pressure under cap and goes away. There was a leak at the old thermostat is that from pressure. I just talked to diesel repair shop close by and say's he has worked on these jeeps and offered me to bring it in. The turbo he mentioned if not working properly could cause heat. I am thinking about adding electric fan and pull hayden. $100 at amazon I can get all parts, hayden automatic thermo junk?

I believe the efan is connected somehow with the engine temp, maybe computer controlled? I remember a while ago when my thermostat was stuck on semi-open, climbing a hill would cause the efan to start, temp going little over 1/2, no ac engaged. When I added the big trany cooler, I had to take out the stock fan, I saw it has 3 wires, this telling me it may have also 2 speeds...

After I replaced the thermostat, I havent heard the efan engaging unless I started the ac.

I did some testing today and confirmed that with the a/c off, the electric fan comes on when coolant temp reaches 205 deg f.
It turned off at about 180 deg f.
Temperature readings were taken using the TorquePro android app and with a IR temp probe.
(I removed my mechanical fan a year ago and have had no overheating problems)
