On my 99.5 ALH TDI I installed the dieselgeek.com kit which was a hose and a new direct tube between the exhaust manifold and intake manifold. It was the parts for a European model TDI. In the case of our VM's I would just like to block it off at both manifolds and completely remove the cooler.

Is this possible?

Nice write up in that link, but I have to ask - why bother? If you have deleted EGR and are only using the EGR valve for the turbo surge function, there is no heat load on the EGR cooler to shed. By running coolant through the now inert EGR cooler don't you get some additional cooling benefit to operating temperatures overall, even if its now just a heat sink for the coolant flowing though it?

Likely to be an insignificant amount of engine cooling from the tiny EGR cooler. IMO eliminating the potential leak points by cutting off flow to the cooler is a much greater benefit.

Then again, the whole cooling system is a "potential leak point." If the EGR cooler isn't leaking now, it may never leak for the life of the vehicle, so why bother? If it does leak, fix it by bypassing the cooler completely if you like, but until then, it seems like you'd be jumping at shadows.

That's a specious argument. No one is going to delete the whole cooling system to make their vehicle more reliable. There have been about 5 or 10 people on this board who have reported coolant leaks on the EGR system. Shadows? Hardly. I eliminated 8 leak-prone hose clamped fittings as potential failure points.

I don't see how this is so hard to comprehend. Wouldn't you agree that simpler is more reliable? My question is if your EGR is non-functional, and you're already there doing the glow plugs (as I was), why WOULDN'T you delete the EGR cooling circuit?

Obviously you cannot leak proof an entire cooling system but what can you do to minimize possible leak points?
1. get rid of the factory tension clamps either as you do work or proactively (I do the former). Those tension clamps lose tension over time and can produce almost invisible slow leaks (been there done that on several other vehicles); are a bear to remove and replace without the semi-special grooved tool; and most folks are not aware that a) they are designed for a 1 time use (e.g. are supposed to be replaced not reused) and b) come in different tensions so mixing same size but different tension is a problem.
2. where possible eliminate extra clamps. For example the hard piping in the heater circuit adds 4 clamps and the only reason for the hard pipe is to keep heater hose off the block. I'm probably too lazy to remove it but might and surely would if one of those clamps leaked.
3. remove coolant circuits that don't do anything. The EGR cooler fits this category if you have a GDE tune. Again I'm lazy but probably will make the effort when I drop in the Etecno1 glow plugs since I'll already be in there. The eliminates some hose, several clamps, and the EGR cooler itself. Are they prone to leaking not particularly but they have been known to do so and the flip side of being lazy is I'd hate to have to go back in there to fix a leak later.
