The MAP reads temperature and pressure of the air charge post turbo and intercooler. The MAF reads the flow of the incoming are through the air box. There is a second sensor on the air box that reads temperature, but I don't think data from it is used if you have a GDE tune.

Sorry, did not notice that SGII was displaying MAP numbers. Hopefully, you can set it to display MAF. If not, I was able to get the manufacturer to add functions to my SGII for my R56 Mini.

Otherwise, Torque Pro and a $15 ELM327 work great for this.

Is there a specific 'good' 'bad' 'watch' for maf? I am at about 200' above seal level in Newport RI, I'm getting reading of 17.8 - 18.6 at idle regardless of engine temperature

Striper, those are good numbers. You are running a GDE tune, right?

I am absolutely convinced that it is high soot levels in NA spec motors that kills rockers prematurely and has little to do with which oil is used.

Also, excessive soot is not just due to EGR. GDE tunes offer much more complete combustion.

We ran with SEGR and InMotion SII for 40K miles before GDE came along. We did not see our oil staying translucent between changes until 20K after switching to GDE tunes.

I would just keep checking MAF numbers periodically.

I have just tore down my CRD to install the ARP studs to remedy the coolant leak. On inspection the rockers show no signs of wear ! I was prepared to replace but I can't find anything wrong with them. Is this possible? I checked each one for cam marks, roller binding and they are tight and spin easily. I am original owner and have used the Mobil 1 0w-40 95% of the time and did the GDE eco-tune in 04/2010 (25-30k miles ago). Don't like repairing things that are not broken and I plan on keeping this lil tractor till it is no longer a viable option! (which the wife said was years ago) .... Bottom line, I think I am going to button her back up and shoot for 300K! Be interested to hear what some other members would do...

A couple of mine were OK, several were very bad, and the rest were in between.

If it were me, I would put the new ones in and save the good old ones for spares, but that's me. How go the studs?

Smacker,

How many total miles? If you have 75K stock, 25K GDE, I would absolutely replace the rockers NOW. We now know that keeping the soot out of the oil by using a GDE tune will allow us to replicate London taxi longevity.

Think about it, $360 for peace of mind going forward? I would do it if the rockers were $1000.

+1 for the peace of mind, why risk it?

I'm from the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" camp. If they're OK I'd leave them alone. Nice to see another positive data point from the Mobil 1 0w-40/GDE combo.

x2 squared and cubed. Soot is the problem.

x4 5 and 6. Soot is the common denominator in all I have read.

Get Rid of the EGR and rockers will last the life of the engine. That's why i'm sticking with Mobil 1 0w-40!!

I'm trying to purchase a car long distance. The buyer hooked up a friend's OBDII scanner and got a reading of 2.2

I have no idea what units were being used, whether the car was warm or anything else. I'm still trying to get more information and troubleshoot the reading. My question to you all: Is such a reading even possible?

Car is in great shape with new samco hoses, GDE FT Eco tune, provent or similar mod and only about 70k miles. Any ideas?

That would be 2.2 lbs/min. Mine reads this at operating temperature at idle. Back when this was announced as a potential issue, GDE gave a range of 130 to 150 lbs/hr as a MAF reading as being an indicator of rocker arms as being "good". Since that reading is 132 lbs/hr, one could say it's borderline. I'm at 152K miles and was advised to just wait until the next timing belt change at 200K to change them.

Thanks, kdlewis1975. I finally googled around and figured that lb/min unit out.

Does the same altitude adjustment apply to the lb/hr number? This would be at about 1200 in altitude, so would add 4-5lb/hr more putting me in a little better place if so. I will be driving the car back across the country, so hoping nothing explodes on me along the way!

I would assume the altitude adjustment applies here as well. I was at 750 or so feet above sea Kevel in Mid-Michigan. I'll measure here in Richmond, VA when I get a chance...elevation is a bit lower here. You're supposed to correct for temperature too, but unless the parameters are extreme (like being in Denver for instance), give or take a few pounds probably doesn't matter.

Intake air temperature makes quite a big difference. I've measured values ranging from 670-770mg/str depending on IAT. I've only been tracking this parameter since April so would expect to see it go even higher in the dead of winter.

Just curious why you would go with a 10W weight oil in the summer? 5W-40 and 10W-40 should provide the same performance at operating temperature. 5W will just be thinner when its cold, providing more flow to the engine for the same oil pressure. I can't see any reason this would be a bad thing.
