So my cruise does not work on my crd I have replaced the clockspring, new switches at the steering wheel, brake switch, park lamp relay, and I have done the accuator test on the dash and the cruise light works it just wont turn on I have traced the wires and all look to be in good shape no cracks or exposed wires anywhere. I don't know what else it could be someone metioned a vaccum hose but from what I can tell the diesel looks to be all electronically controlled. If anyone has an idea about what it could be please help ive been trying to figure this out since I bought the vehicle 4months ago. It sure would be nice to use it sometime.

Suggest you visit Sam's NOOB guide and get copies of the 05 and 06 FSMs (05 lacks diesel cooling section and diagnostics but has illustration keys while 06 is the reverse).

The CRD does not IIRC use any vacuum to drive cruise it's all "electric". If the light doesn't come on when you press the cruse on/set button and never has my bet is:
1. you don't have cruise but someone added the buttons without the rest of the system
2. same as 1 but with the rest of the system but they never bothered to have the ECU programmed to turn cruise on
3. someone (dealers have been known to "accidentally do this") reporgrammed the ECU and forgot to tell it to turn cruise on
4. any odd performance of you speedometer/odometer/anti-lock brakes. I'm not sure if memory is right but lack of cruise may also be related to a bad wheel speed sensor which usually kills other things because the vehicle doesn't know how far or fast it is or has traveled.

No the speedo and rpm work fine so does the odometer and trip I was thinking maybe someone added it to but not sure the things wired like its from the factory and I know its been to the dealer a few times in its lifetime and I've heard that it can be shut off and I'm thinking maybe that's what has happened. Will only using a starscan fix it if its off

I have no clue what tool can be used to turn cruise on/off although IIRC it's a different tool for 05 vs. 06. Sir Sam or Keith at GDE could probably tell you although bottom line is you may have to visit a dealer unless you want a GDE tune in which case I suspect Keith can activate cruise as part of the tune.

I know with the original ECM programming the cruise control is set to stop working whenever a CEL is present.

The GDE tune does not have this restriction IIRC.

I have no CEL I've run my OBDII code reader and no codes. I have a funny feeling the dealer his shut it off its factory wired I did notice one thing today that the lower back lights are not working the backups work when in reverse but when the headlights are on the bottoms are not working. The posts I've read say that may cause it also will be looking into that today. If I'm right those lights should only work when the head lights are on right.

I remember a post about a bad ground somewhere in the rear lights causing those symptoms...might be worth a search.

got good ground but there is a white with red strip wire theres two of these one powers the lights with the headlights on. The one red stripe/ white wire thas no power at all im trying to figure out where these wires go I know that there going into the backside of the fuse box, and they have power at the box but not at the bottom brake light at all. I think that maybe there is a break but boy were they go inside the back passenger fender is hard to get to without tearing apart the whole thing, but maybe a mouse has chewed one of these wires I have heard if the brakes lights aren't working the cruise wont work either. I have a feeling this is were my problem is if not then its the ecu but im hoping for a wire. If there are any ideas of where these wire might travel it would be greatly appreciated with any help

thank you

What? I've never heard or seen of this before and I have had CELs set from day one with the ORM. Cruise has always worked.

Download the service manual and then find the cruise control buttons in the wiring diagrams, start tracing back wiring from the buttons and do loop checks for continuity.

I just picked up my '06 Limited and cruise control does not come on at all, not even the light on the dash. Would contacting the dealer be the first thing to do to see if it was turned off in the tune?

The "cruise" light, bottom left of the odometer window, does not come on with most all the other lights when the ignition is turned on. However, if you invoke the instrument cluster test by holding the odometer reset button down while switching the ignition on but not starting the engine the "cruise" light will illuminate as part of that test. Assuming it does light up there is a good chance the cruise is not "turned on" in the ECU flash. On the CRD IIRC the cruise is totally electronic and it's not unheard of for a dealer to forget to turn in on when an ECU is updated.

That said if you don't have a GDE tune you should and I believe Keith can turn the cruise on at the same time at no added charge.

I'm assuming your odometer and such do work? I ask because a bad wheel speed sensor can kill cruise but it usually kills other things as well.

I just tried what you mentioned and the cruise light does light up in test mode, so it's working. The Odometer does work so I guess it must just be turned off in the tune. Thanks for your help.
