So in colorado this week I over heated my transmission (did the same thing last year). I had noticed a "sweetish" smell before the little light kicks on. Both times I stop, place the trans in neutral & kick the heater on full blast and wait for it to cool off. I admit I may have over worked it both times. But now everytime I'm in 4low for awhile I smell that burning sweet smell. It even had bees and butterflies swarming around by engine when I took a break. I havent overheated it again. Do yall think it's time for me to replace my transmission fluid (43k miles) or possibly my x-fer case fluid. I'm thinking that my over heating it may have altered the fluid in some way. Any thoughts you mechanical gurus?

Burnt trans fluid does not smell sweet. The only sweet smelling fluid that is in your Jeep is coolant.

You should have changed out your trans, t-case and diffs at 30,000 miles.

When you overheat your tans, not only can you ruin the properties of the fluid, but as you pass approximately 265° you permanently alter the pliability of the internal seals. This will lead to losses in holding pressures that will allow bands and clutches to slip causing more heat buildup.

I've installed trans temp senders in a few of my automatic trans 4x4s and have noticed that when the temps get higher than I would like, the fastest way to cool the trans is to actually shut the engine off and wait. I thought that letting the cooling system handle it, like you did, would be the best, but I surmise that the combination of a 210 degree minimum coolant temp and the continued shearing of the fluid in the torque converter was the reason it was less effective.

I would also recommend getting a PML deep finned trans pan to aid in cooling.

I wasn't too conserned since my owners manual say to change thr trans oil out at 65k miled if used for heavytowing or fleet use. I thought that my over heating it might have affected it. I had hoped that the warning light would come on before it got hot enough to alter the oil. Perhapse regearing will help too.
Would that trans pan fit with the skid plate?

I always do the first trans oil changes at 30K. Based on the fact that the manufacturer wants your vehicle out last the warranty but not last forever, you may want to change out the factory fill a little earlier.

I'm guessing that the pan will fit as they call it low profile. I'll be finding out for sure when I put one on in another 15K. I'll be adding a trans temp sensor at that time, also.

here is a pic of my factory pan's clearance...and a pic from the web of one that's been installed.
