nice pics, @Tedder. And I feel your pain, @paineman.

In 2009, we dragged a 5,000 lb TT from the east coast to the Olympic Penninsula, down the PCH to LA, then east through Vegas and past the Grand Canyon, thence to DC and home. 9,000 miles, give or take. The CRD had about 80,000 miles on it at that point, and we had overheating troubles which were solved temporarily by replacing the thermostat and fan clutch in LA. Worked fine going through the Rockies on the way back, but the fan clutch wore out before the next trip west in 2011, when we dragged the trailer to Vegas via Denver, then did a loop around the Grand Canyon, hitting Bryce and Zion before sprinting back east. About 7,000 miles that time, and the main problem was the high pressure oil line to the turbo blew near Russell, Kansas. Fortunately no damage to the turbo or the engine, but I dumped a lot of oil on the front of the trailer.

So, yeah, I feel your pain. I like this little tractor, BUT it is definitely the least reliable vehicle I've ever owned in the 50 years I've been driving. That said, I'm also not one to obsess about what might go wrong next on the road.

You need to host your pictures on a free site like ImageShack then create a post on the forum; click on the "Img" button which will create a pair of brackets with "Img" inside the brackets; copy the link to the picture between the 2 bracketed items; repeat as needed; post.

Pics will then appear in your post for anyone using a Web browser other than IE9

Gives me some hope that my 2500 mile trip from PA to CA will be uneventful. Look forward to joining the CRD club soon (but not the nightmare story part of it!). I am a longtime TDI owner, and this car will be for my wife and our soon to arrive first child. All I can say is, I wouldn't buy it without the assurance that I have a second car to fall back on, and the fact that the right car came along. Unfortunately, my TB will have to wait to get across the country before getting it done (68k on vehicle). So I will be a little bit nervous on the drive home.

I think my CRD's can feel the LOVE. 2500 should be no problem in my opinion most of the problems with these little guys are the same as the gas model. The engines are bullet proof.

Nice pics, nice post. I'm on the same page about taking my CRD on LONG road trips. Never a problem. Went through a couple major blizzards last winter. Took two trips to Death Valley (back country) early this spring. Have done many trips throughout the inter-mountain west (Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, NM, and AZ.)

I've gone as far east as Central Kansas twice to visit family. Utah and Nevada are not the middle of nowhere, the mid-west is. ;)

People who are not experiencing problems just don't post much. Most are not even aware this board exists.

Of course, YMMV
