I have searched and struck out. I must really suck at searching, I strike out more often than I find stuff. Is there a good exhaust mod / upgrade for these vehicles?

On the GM 6.5's the 4" exhaust is an almost mandatory upgrade. Is there something similar for these Jeeps?

Any links to info about Cats and quality, performance enhancing exhaust systems?

No cat monitoring on these diesels = no CEL

Don't mess with a muffler, just straight pipe it.

I have no axe to grind one way or another on an exhaust mod but would say get a GDE tune before spending money on an exhaust mod. I'll also observe that the smallest "choke" point in the system is way up there at the turbo where IIRC the inside diameter is like 2.25" so whether going bigger further back matters I don't know.

If you do go bigger:
1. don't throw away the cat. Regulations change and owners change and location of the owner may change to a situation where a cat must be in place to pass inspection. There have been cases where folks had to go out a buy a cat, having thrown the original away, because of a change.
2. same with the muffler if you straight pipe.

Who makes a good quality stainless cat for these jeeps?

I have a Magnaflow on our Tahoe and have not been impressed. The heat shields are loose and rattling. I used stainless stove bolts to reattach and it's back rattling again. Not sure what the issue is now.

A post from Lost - "If you got rid of the 2 1/8" choke point in the cat flange, you did a good thing.
I ran and posted tests on back pressure by putting a boost gauge between the turbo and cat. When I got rid of the 2 1/8" choke point and 2 1/2" all the way back, the back pressure went to 0.0 PSI and stayed there. With your 3" as long as you got rid of the 2 1/8" choke flange should also have 0.0 PSI back pressure.

My stock turbo spools up much faster too."

This is along the lines of where I want to go with the exhaust. Now we have an 8 year old exhaust with 140,000 miles on the cat. I still think this is a necessary upgrade at this mileage. A plugging cat will kill an engine as fast as anything

Does anybody make a heavy duty, last forever, 2 1/2" stainless high flow exhaust for these vehicles ?

We generally keep our vehicles forever and I do not want to be doing this again in 5 or 10 years

Has anybody had a plugged cat on these vehicles? What makes me antsy is the cats that I've seen off of other diesels that have a fair amount of miles on them. Pretty plugged up. Changing or removing the cat really revived them.

I'll probably install an over sized cat, designed for a diesel or skip it.

The only cat I found is from Random Technologies 6" diameter 770 554 4242

Ok there's also a flex pipe between the turbo and crap converter. When I made my exhaust I flaired up to a 3" flex and went straight pipe all the way. I did point it out the side for clean trailering :2cents:

MBRP I know makes a nice cat back for gas liberty, and they are known for diesel exhausts.
I was going to see if this would fit, of course with a couple of feet of extra pipe to ditch cat.

I started a thread here on this quite awhile back to try and generate enough interest for a mbrp 3" straight exhaust but got some naysayers. I even had some very good conversations with mbrp tech support but they pulled the plug on it for not enough interest. For the most part 2.5" is just fine for back pressure but the bigger difference is EGT's are lowered more with bigger exhaust, especially when towing.

I removed the cat and muffler and installed a glass pack as a resonator. But the GF said it was still too quiet so I just piped it. Sounds pretty good and got another 2mpg out of it and lowered the EGTs a bit. She drives 50 miles one way to work so we know the gain is pretty accurate. She just wants it to sound like my Cummins :D

These are 2 1/2" cat back gasser kits. All stainless with stainless hardware. Will they be a direct bolt on for the most part?

If these kits willo work I would go with Flowmaster 817608 $381.48,

Magnaflow 15870 $497.68 or

MBRP S5510409 $314.50

Those prices are from autoanything.com
(800) 874-8888 ext 7116
Let me know what you think our best move on the exhaust is
These are all cat back systems for a gasser

Our down pipes are 2.5". I removed the cat and then did a 2.5" back with no muffler and I notices a torque drop off so I added a small muffler in line and felt better about the power.

I had a local muffler shop remove the cat and stock muffler and put a Flowmaster Part No. 942542 Series 40 delta flow at old muffler location, installed new 2.5 inch pipe from just behind flex pipe to muffler and added a chrome 3" tip on tailpipe. Looks good and sounds great! No noticeable interior noise increase or drone at any speed. It is a good bit louder outside. Power difference was a big increase on first drive. Also noticed the gas millage estimator overhead jumped about 5 mpg. :D
Used original 2.5 inch pipe from muffler to rear bumper as there was nothing wrong with it.
Installing a larger pipe will not help much unless you run it all the way from the turbo back according to what I was told by my Dodge race truck friend. :!:
Bought the Flowmaster at Advance Auto Parts, they got it in overnight after ordering for around 80 bucks. Whole job parts and labor cost less than $200. Very happy with the results and saved a few bucks. :pepper:

I cut out the cat and did 2.5 in from there to the muffler using the first kit https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carc ... type,10727.
