usa591 no need to "think" about it; your tstat is opening early and costing you ca. 10% in mpg. Been there done that.

Man, I wish I knew more about the fuel / timing / boost / temperature maps.

If you lose a lot of economy by running cool (losing a little bit is inevitable), then there's probably some timing issue that runs at less than optimum timing for some reason.

I wish I had some means of tweaking the timing myself to see what kind of economy improvements I can get. I suspect that there's way too little advance below 2200, to reduce hydrocarbons and raise exhaust temps ( to please the catalyst) to get decent fuel economy.

If you want timing and other twicks then get a GDE tune. They have done all the research.

I know they have a reputation of producing "better than stock" results.

I don't like buying someone else's stuff, I like doing it myself. That's why my offroad truck is an 81 SWB W150 With a hot slant six running on propane, crank trigger ignition and custom timing curves written by... me :) I'm sure there's only one in the whole world just like it.

While I understand where you are coming from, if you don't do something along the lines of the GDE tune, you'll be buying a lot of "other people's stuff" from IDParts, VM, Etc. when you waste the Rockers/Lifters due to EGR soot or lost tons of MPG/Power because of build up.

Even the ORM doesn't completely resolve this.
