hey Everyone,
We are running the Mojave Road on October 18-20. I know we have all the info on the other forum but lets post up here also. Some of us are staying at the AVI Hotel in Laughlin Thursday night. So if you want to do that get that all booked now. We will have 2 1/2 days on the trail, so please make sure to bring a good tent and sleeping bags, food and water for 3 days on the trail and plenty of gas. Can we get a head count here as to who is going?

1.) Tami and Wally

I was hoping all this "government shutdown" BS would blow over, but it's getting close to our trip date now. If it isn't resolved by then, do we have any idea what effect, if any, it will have on access to the Mojave Road? Obviously they can't gate the whole road, but particularly when we get to the Mojave National Preserve (part of the National Park system), I can't imagine we won't encounter some sort of gate or posted road closures at some point.

I think we should go ahead and go, I'm sure we can figure out a way to get around gates if they truly are locked. This whole shutdown just sucks and we shouldn't have to be kept out of these areas. Everyone else chime in lets hear your thoughts.

I also think we should just go. We'll figure something out if gates are closed, that's half the fun.

Works for me. I just wanted to be sure we were thinking about it. If they don't resolve it before we go, I suspect any actual locked gates would be only on the paved entrance roads, which wouldn't really affect us unless people needed to head out to gas up, or when we actually need to head back to civilization. One thing in our favor, there is no entrance fee for the preserve, so there's no real checkpoints to block off. There may not be gates at all. If there are gates, they'd probably be on our exit paths to I-15: Kelbaker Road, Rasor Road and Afton Canyon Road.

There's one potential trouble spot in the middle of the preserve, where the Mojave Road route uses Cedar Canyon Road, which is graded dirt and briefly paved. That might be a likely spot for barriers or encountering "essential personnel" if there are any.

Here's a picture I found that shows what they did on the dirt road leading into Covington Flats at Joshua Tree NP. Obviously that won't stop anyone. But the paved roads there are gated closed.

FYI - I was reading a post on Expedition Portal a couple days ago from a guy who just ran Mojave Road. He stated there are signs at Marl Springs stating No Tents and No Campfires...but said that a couple miles past it around a hill, there is a large camping area at the base of the rocks. Just sharing cause I believe it was a tentative plan to camp there.

Thanks Karen, great info. That was the plan to camp at Marl Springs the first night, so we will just do what you have found out!

Because of some family plans Hannah and I will be driving out Friday morning. Do we have a meeting point and time?
On the last trip we took on the Mojave Road we just kinda pulled off of the road and camped in the first open flat spot we found. I don't think we need to worry about camp grounds closed.

Been wanting to do this for a long time. It's a bucket-lister for sure.

FYI, I'll be bringing my InReach satellite tracker. It's like a Spot device only better. It has the same 9-1-1 functionality as a Spot (not that we'll need it), but it can also send and receive text messages using the Iridium satellite phone network. It comes in handy if you need to get a message out to someone that doesn't rise to the level of a 9-1-1 call.

It will also track our position every 10 minutes and post it to a MapShare page so anyone not on the trip can follow our progress and see where we're at. Here's the Link (password is LOST). I'll also post the link on the Lost Jeeps SoCal Facebook page: https://share.delorme.com/c559370c47984 ... 139e0ef508

By the way, I know a lot of us have Ham radios but I'm still CB-only. Hope that won't be a problem.

That's awesome, thanks for bringing that. We will have extra handheld ham radios for people to use also.

Hey Everyone,
Just a couple of reminders for Mojave Road. If I am missing anything please add it to the list.

1.) Some of us are staying at the Avi Casino Thursday night, we should be arriving around 4-5. if you want to meet up with the group for dinner let us know.
2.) Anyone who has an extra 2 meter HT please bring it along. We will be on Simplex channel 145.535 for those who do not have one we will loan you one to use for the weekend.
3.) I can haul 20 gallons of fuel on my trailer. 10 gallons of that is reserved for Will and myself. I have 10 gallons left if anyone wants to purchase, I will haul it for you.
4.) We will need about 4-5 bundles of firewood. I have one bundle now. Maybe a few more people can bring a bundle?

thanks
