So I'm new to these CRD's (owned other diesels) mines an 06 with 130 KM yes KM not miles.
Anyway I have a funny noise thats coming from the engine I do believe. Its a slight rattle or so it sounds like, right at idle or low RPM goes away as soon as I accelerate up to speed. But at stop lights or just sitting at an idle or in reverse it starts to rattle again.
Kinda an odd one for sure, wondering if my engine mounts are loose, because it kinda sounds like a bolt is rattling around.
Any help is appreciated .
I'm also wondering if it could NOT be the mounts as the motor doesn't vib at all or make the truck vibrate at all, in the cabin, its smooth as butter. Except for that annoying rattle at idle or going into reverse.

Thanks

I have the same problem, but I've isolated it to my exhaust system. It's like a chatter under the front passenger side. I put my foot on the tail pipe (on initial startup before it heats up) and the rattle goes away. Although, I'm not sure what to do about mine. I think I've isolated it to a section where it may be the catalytic converter, but I'm not sure. I've been considering replacing the exhaust system from the elbow back.

And when I'm accelerating the rattling seems more pronounced and I'm thinking that is due to a resonant frequency that triggers it.

Both of your rattles could easily be the engine mounts. The mount sounds like a coffee can full of bolts when it goes bad. They aren't that expensive, and they DO go bad after about 60k miles or so, so if they haven't been changed - they are due.

Just order 2 of whichever is the cheaper mount from IDparts.com and transfer the heat shield to the new one. Other than the shield, both mounts are exactly the same.

geordi, would putting my foot on the tail pipe affect the motor mount vibration that easily or do I have two different issues?

Depends where on the tailpipe and how hard you pushed. There is a semi-flexible section just in front of the cat, but that could easily transmit some force back into the turbo through the rest of the non-flexible connections. Since the mount is about 2/3 the way down the engine, and the exhaust pipe connects at the top, the "moment arm" is fairly long between that top point and the pivot of the engine mount. Small forces with a long moment arm can do more work.

Thanks geordi, I think I'll order the engine mounts anyway and replace them.
But also check and see if any bolts are loose on my exhaust, not even sure if its a one piece or not.

Franko - just a reminder that both motor mounts are identical but for the heat shield on the passenger side mount. Save yourself a few coins and order 2 driver side mounts and just move the old passenger side heat shield over during the install.
