I have read many reports that the MAF on the 2.8 Diesel will have no effect on the running of the engine if you unplug it other than deactivate the EGR. So my question is, .... Is the EGR the only thing the MAF sensor controls on the diesel? What is its actual function and can it cause poor running of my CRD?

Some including myself have either unplugged the MAF or removed it from the air box and left it plugged up to deactivate the EGR valve. :) I did the latter for a while till I made a block off plate and installed it on the EGR valve. With it removed it will keep setting a CEL code since the OBC does not sense any air flow through the air box. I could only tell an improvement in engine performance with the EGR being disabled. I do not believe it serves any other function?

Oh so you blocked the EGR without a tune? Just with the ORM?

Made a solid plate and completely blocked off the EGR inlet, left it connected electrically, plugged and removed all the coolant hoses to the EGR. Put the MAF back in service (no ORM) since I don’t care if the EGR operates or not (no exhaust feed). Then removed the butterfly out of the FCV.
See my earlier post at http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=76576
for block off plate dimensions.
Jeep runs great now and am getting 25+ mpg around town. :JEEPIN:
