My 05 liberty diesel has started to vibrate quite a lot around 2000 RPM. I changed tires and wheels summer to winter and it made no difference. There is no clunking when putting it into gear so I don't think it is the u joints. Reeving it up to 2000 rpm in the driveway produces no vibration. putting it into neutral while running at 2000 RPM produces the same vibration and noise as it does when in gear. Any thoughts??

Thanks Dave

Probably driveline related. It could be a bent axle shaft. Try this, work through the gears manually holding each one through 2000rpm - does the vjbration appear in each gear at the same place?

Not sure what drive line shaft rotates in neutral but then it's not clear what gear shift position you were in when you were "Reeving it up to 2000 rpm in the driveway" which could make a difference. In any case if whatever is rotating involves any type of "U" or CV joint then absence of clunk is not a good indicator that those joints are ok. In fact there have been numerous reports of "U" joints appearing to be ok until the shaft was dropped and which point it was easy to tell the "U" joints were way past shot.

IIRC your turbo should engage around 2k rpms, 2250 I believe. Simple test to check that is to remove the intake hose and check the shaft for play in any direction.

Don't have it running when you check it, please.

If you have more than 60,000 miles on your CRD and have never changed the Gear oil in the front and rear differentials and also the ATF-4 Fluid in the transfer case ..... then I would start there.

So, replace the fluids and see where that takes you.

Replacing the fluids solved the drive line issues that I was experiencing at highway speeds.

Sorry I thought he was saying he shifted into neutral while running (I assumed the vehicle was on the road and moving) not just sitting in the driveway. Need more detail.

X2 - Pardon me, I thought the vehicle was in motion also.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Yes I put into neutral while running down the highway and the vibration was still there. In the driveway I had it in park just to see if there was any vibration and there was none. I am hearing a slight clunk when shifting back and forth while stopped so perhaps it is U joints. I will have another look and see if I can detect anything.

Thanks Dave

Take the driveshaft all the way out and see if all the joints are nice and free. Typical failure mode on these is seizure, not looseness.

I had the same symptoms as you. Ended up being one bad bearing on a u joint. Replaced both joints and didn't do it since.
