Does anyone know if there is a way to repair the CV joint on the front drive shaft? It's not looking good but I have my fingers crossed. 450 for the whole drive shaft seems super steep!

Are you asking about the front propeller shaft between the transfer case and front differential or one of the front axle shafts that drive the front wheels. :?: If you are asking about the propeller shaft, view my write up on replacing one of the joints at:

Contact these folks, they have whole driveshafts and replacement joint/boot kits for reasonable prices. Much lower than dealer. :SOMBRERO:

You can always disconnect it and run without a front driveshaft, if you have to. You'd be a RWD KK temporarily!

I had something similar to this happen on my 05' Chevy Silverado and I may be wrong but by the way it sprayed it might just need to be repacked with some grease with a new boot. It doesn't look to messy so you may have caught it in time and might not even need to replace any of the parts/joints just the boot.

Hope this helps, and if Im wrong someone please speak up just incase this happens to me then I can know 100% thanks :)

I did order and receive just the boot for my KJ, after taking it apart found the cage busted and had to order the whole kit, CV joint & boot. Still got the just boot kit in stock, got it from Drivelineparts, got the whole CV joint & boot kit from Detroit Axle off eBay. (best price & free shipping)
The boots look real similar, a KJ boot may just work if your CV joint is ok? Just clean and repack with fresh grease and replace the boot.
If you need dimensions or part number of the replacement boot that I have, let me know and I will post.

PS, I did drive around for a week or so with the front driveshaft out, aka 2 wheel drive. No problems encountered... :JEEPIN:

where can I get just the boot? If I can pick one up today I will try it if not it will have to wait till I get back. if the noise gets any louder or changes I will remove the shaft for my trip.

Ok so I found a guy that will replace the whole cv end. Unfortunately its 200 dollars and I dont want to risk waiting till after my trip.

Heres the problem now. I dropped the shaft and noticed my mounting marks rubbed off. Any idea how to make sure it goes back on right the first time?

Ok. so I'm all fixexd up! I dropped the drive shaft and took it to the guy. He says sorry I dont have that kind of shaft! after telling me yesterday that he had it for sure. anyway.....I went to a salvage yard and they gave me a whole drive shaft along with a lifetime warranty on the shaft which covers all boots for 130.00 out the door!!! Mounted it up and away I went. I'll do a complete write up on how to replace it later but for now here the jist.

Get under the jeep unbolt
unbolt the 6 8mm bolts on the transfer case end
Remove the 4 bolts 15mm on the front end of the shaft(closest to the front of the jeep)
remove the sensor from the exhaust(you will know which one, it wont let the shaft drop(Crescent Wrench)
drop the front end of the shaft
slide the shaft all the way forward until the cv-joint end can drop down
Reverse everything to install!

Notes:
Mine did not want to come out of the transfer case side. I had to beat the heck out of it to break it loose.

Since I have the old shaft I will probably still buy the rebuild kit when it comes in....it never hurts to have 2!
