Hi,

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I have had my Liberty 06 for 2.5 years now and clocked about 50,000 miles, mostly trouble free, except for the usual change of turbo hoses and such. I absolutely love my Liberty.

Recently I have begun experiencing some tranny issues. Mainly if I drive fairly aggressively, ie fast accelerations on the highway and such. The Jeep will just stay stuck in 3rd gear on the highway. I'll be rolling along at say 50 mph and will press the accelerator to speed up and the tranny will go into this weird place where it doesn't shift up, the engine revs up but nothing happens to the tranny. The only way I have found to exit this weird state of affairs is to pull over by the side of the road, shut the engine off, restart and drive much more smoothly. The frequency of these occurrences is increasing. Anyone have any ideas what is causing this? Am I doomed to a big tranny job?

Thanks

That is called "Limp Mode" and it usually does that to protect the Transmission.

Scan your OBD to see what codes you are getting, nearly 100% sure you're going to see an active or stored P0700 which is the generic transmission code.

You'll have to take it to a tranny shop or really good diagnostics place to have it checked, they usually do it for free.

I wouldn't recommend continued driving with it like that, fix whatever the problem is before it becomes 5 other problems, report back and I'll have more advice on what to do next. It's most likely just a Solenoid Pack issue, which is relatively cheap if you handle whatever the issue is now rather than continuing to drive on it.

To that I would add:
1. the 545RFE is a common transmission in DCJ vehicles hence any decent tranny shop can handle it. In other words you are not limited to a dealer for tranny service.
2. unfortunately pulling tranny codes can be difficult without a dealer or dealer equivalent code reader hence you may need a better than average tranny shop to pull the codes.

It wasn't mentioned, but how long since your last ATF fluid and filter replacement? Simply having old fluid or poorly flowing filters (or too much/too little fluid) and do strange things. As long as it's been done every 30-40k miles and hasn't had any significant problems previously, "flushing" is usually more harm than good, but a full drain and refill can do wonders.

and not to forget the obvious

it's cold in some parts of the country and if the tranny's cold - it won't shift into overdrive.

takes a couple of miles of warmup first.

I am in Vancouver, Canada. Last tranny fluid change was about 10,000 miles ago. Problem occurs well after my engine and tranny are warmed up. Thanks for the help.
