So I've got my tranny out. I've got a euro TC, filters, Transgo shift kit and fluids all sitting on the workbench waiting for me to return from this latest business trip. But I'm wondering; as long as I have the thing out should I go ahead and replace the pump too? I don't think I was having any issues with the pump but I really don't want to have to pull the trans again either. Does somebody have a part number for that so I can I can investigate pricing? Also, if there is a preferred vendor to buy it from that would be helpful too.

The PN for the newer pump is 68009879AB and it takes a different gasket than the older pump. I don't know if the gasket comes with the pump or if it must be obtained separately. That said it's my impression, not my certain knowledge, that the Transgo kit comes with a part that will fix the potential pump problem. Check around or you might call SunCoast and ask Ron Wolverton.

When I had my pump replaced I noticed that the engine noise at ilde was reduced.

I was told not to install the trango kit if I had the pump replaced.... this information came directly from transgo. They said no need to.

I was in a similar situation as you. (Trans out and no real reason to replace the front pump) I did end up putting a new pump in and it has been working great. Here is what I ended up getting form the dealer, they are re-manufactured pumps.

I would replace the pump. The transgo kit did not fix my drain back issue.

so if they're in there replacing the TC with the euro and there have been no problems "yet" is it best to replace the pump or put on the Transgo shift kit?

When I talked to my local transmission specialist, he recommends replacing the the oil pump when you have the transmission out for TC replacement. He stated it is a wear item and should be replaced. I plan to do this in the spring.
The Transgo kit is your choice. :)

replace pump. As for the trans go kit. Helps with shifting but did not fix my drain back issues. I'm going to try and replace the filters this weekend and see if that helps. The ones I'm using I got off ebay. Came in factory boxes but i'm thinking they are not.

X3. Replace the pump. They upgraded the design for a reason.

Okay, 88K on my CRD I bought used. Got a Florida HD Low Stall TC ready for install. I have minor chatter at a stop in drive, no drain back issues. I was a professional Trans rebuilder at one time in life . We just use to rebuild the pumps if no hard parts where busted but it seems as though the new pump is redesigned?

Put in a new pump?

Put in a Transgo shift Kit?

Lots of different opinions on this list. Now that more years have gone by can I get some new fresh experience with the above please.

Thanks

These are some of the main reasons why you should replace the transmission oil pump assembly...

*Severe wear of the TC limit valve bore in the front pump housing results in loss of converter release oil pressure. Reduced release pressure at low speed and idle can drag the converter linings, causing engine surge, pulsation or stall.

*The torque converter limit valve spring in the 45RFE, 545RFE front pump can often break. This valve limits converter release pressure. A broken spring can cause the valve to become stuck and result in converter clutch release issues including engine stalls at low speeds.

*Chrysler vehicles equipped with 45RFE, 545RFE and 68RFE transmissions often experience TCC related troubles. These may or may not include trouble codes accompanied by TC clutch slip, no lockup, overheating and / or loss of fuel economy. In some cases, the TC clutches may be unable to release TC lockup, resulting in improper lockup functions and / or complete engine stalling. Problems such as these can be caused by excess wear in the TCC switch valve bore, which allows vital control pressure to escape the circuit. Replacing the complete transmission oil pump assembly with a new updated assembly or reconditioning the bores with the proper tools and installing an oversized TCC switch valve kit can restore crucial clearances for renewed TCC control and operation.

I appreciate the info, to confirm, go with the new pump and complete transgo shiftkit including pump parts on the new pump or are the transgo pump parts redundant with this new pump. Your signature show you have a transgo.

I did not install the transgo kit myself in my Liberty CRD, it was installed by a very good friend who owns a transmission shop at the same time he installed the Suncoast TC and front pump assembly. So I am not sure if there are redundant parts or not, I never asked... :D
The last transgo shift kit I personally installed on a Chevy was all in the valve body so I would assume the installation would be very similar in the RFE545 transmission?

When SunCoast installed my TC we did not change out the front pump but they did install the complete Transgo kit including the appropriate front pump parts. At that time I only had 45,000 miles on my 05 and according to Suncoast the tranny internals including clutch packs looked new, comment was whatever I'm doing keep doing it.

If I was installing a new TC today I'd probably do the new pump AND that portion of the Transgo kit that upgrades items in the valve body (not to be confused with the front pump) including IIRC the valve body side plate.

Just spoke with David at TransGo Tech Support, he told me that the value in their kit is to save us money. Said in 2011 Dodge changed the pump on the 545rfe but we will see in a couple more years if they actually fixed anything. In the meantime he stated unless your pump has hard part failures then the TransGo parts for the pump have fixed 150000+ units so far with 0 failures to repair the issues. He said to always use all the parts in the kit i.e. drop the tranny and repair the pump as well. Crud, I need to cancel the order for the new pump now. TransGo knows their stuff, if you read about their founder (Dr. Gil Younger) it's apparent.
