It might help to get it into a warm place, if there is an ice blockage that's the only safe way to remove it.

Do you have a lift pump? If so you could run it and see if you can get flow into a container. Disconnect the fuel line at the fuel head for that experiment. If you get flow there, then there is probably no line block.

One other possibility could be your fuel lines are gelled up. This rarely happens anymore, but you never know.

The best / easiest way to see if you have AIR IN FUEL is to add a small clear hose 2 inches long at the exit side of the fuel filter. Using a extra interconnect fitting and clamps. That's between the filter and the HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump) Bleed the system, and have someone watch for air while trying to start. Also when running.

A CRD plugged in should start with or without glow plugs. I don't think GP's is a problem.

How cold is it there? Has to get below 0 F to have any fuel gelling issues.

Good Luck

Swapping out the ASD relay checks for a faulty relay but does not test the logic going to the relay.
You need to measure across pins 85 and 86 of the ASD relay to see if the relay coil is getting voltage.

The SKIS system is the anti-theft system that checks the code in the chipped key to start the engine.
There should be a "key" symbol or in your case more likely a small red LED on the Left of the cluster that comes ON when ignition is On for a few seconds then goes out if SKIS is installed.

If this light stays ON or flashes then there is a SKIS problem. :?

Nice tip Billwill....You will never start without that.

Since it started acting up then stopped starting completely, I think its air or simply a bad battery.

That's my :2cents:

Good Luck

OK, Update.

I double checked all the items you all mentioned above with no results.

So disconnected the ECU and then reconnected it just for giggles..... and IT STARTED.

I don't know what caused this condition. Puzzling to say the least and now I worry that it could happen again.

Interesting. That disconnect/reconnect and the problem goes away is giving you, IMHO, a gargantuan hint. When the weather is suitable I'd pull the ECU entirely out of the vehicle are carefully inspect, clean as needed, all the contacts and reassemble with an appropriate application of dielectric grease to ensure good contact and no dampness.

Might also be worth checking whatever wires and/or connectors you might have jiggled while fiddling with the ECU. If you had an 06 I'd have said pay special attention to wires behind the fuel filter head.

Good for you!!! In Aircraft terms we call that a reset and chock it up to be gremlins.

Agree with PapaIndigo, but I would also put a voltmeter on the battery itself, and measure the voltage when it cranks. I suspect incipient battery failure as one possible complicating factor.

LMWatBullRun, X2 on the battery. Also be careful not to use the wrong product on the ECM Connector. Be sure it is made for that type of a connection. Or you may do more damage than good.

Racertracer Question?? Did you disconnect the battery prior to removing the ECM plug?

Just wondering

KJJET, the proper way was to disconnect the battery, but I did not do that and I chalk up my negligence to stress, I just forgot to do it.

Best regards

I had the same problem as you last year. When it was cold, 45 degrees and below, it would never start without a shot of ether. After replacing things like fuel filter, tank pump, glow plugs, relays, sensors and solenoids, nothing fixed it until I replaced two injectors. I figure like most cars, it starts off cylinder #1, so I replaced 1 and 4. Haven't had a SINGLE issue since. I am averaging about 25 in stop and go Austin traffic. I am also running a 2 micron Racor fuel filter as well.

The other morning I parked it in the driveway overnight to see if it would start. It got down to 17 degrees, that was the temp of the hood anyways with frost on it. I waited for the glow plugs and then it started immediately. YAY.

Now I don't hate my jeep. I honest to god used to leave the keys in the ignition with the windows down hoping someone would steal it. Not anymore.

Had almost exact same no start symptoms. Not critical but just saying I did not use either(thought about it though).

Followed the flow of checks and inspections...

Of course I have the nine connections from SEGR just a few inches from the ECU huge connectors and noticed some insulation decay at said SEGR wires. I have to have SEGR working (have disconnected cooling lines to EGR).

So since I was pulling main ECU harnesses for inspection/cleaning as suggested by this thread I replaced the last 14 inches of these nine wires and connections. SEGR box itself sits tucked behind TCM on other side of bay.
What I have here in the desert is dust, dust, dust. The microfine talc kind. ECU connectors were dusty to say the least. I cleaned what I could and very lightly greased the little connector tines. Got everything put together....

IT STARTED!

So gentlemen check your ECU connections if you have no start but as preventative. My Kj has 165 k. miles.

Roland

I had the same problem and solution last winter. Just had to jiggle the ECU connector.
