Hi All
So the parent in laws borrowed the jeep this morning, filled it up with gas (tank was at just under 1/4 with diesel) and drove off a mile before it died. So I am at work, they are towing it to a dealer to drain the tank, I told them to replace the fuel filter as well.

I am assuming the procedure is to start it up after flushing the lines and see how it runs. If okay, great, if not injectors will probably have to be replaced, does this sound correct? Anything I am missing?

I am hoping the injectors are okay but if not what do they cost and how difficult are they to replace? I've done the timing belt myself, im pretty sure its an easy replacement but if its going to cost a lot I may do it myself.

Go to viewtopic.php?f=5&t=69714 and look thru the string. There is a good how to fix by geordi partway done the chat.

Injectors should be fine.

PS when I was about 8 years of age I "helped" my Dad by filling up his '55 Chevy Bel Air with the water hose, heh i was a hose just like at the gas station. He let me live and after a tank drain the Chevy ran fine long enough for me to get my learner's permit some 7 years later in the same vehicle.

This was actually the second time this CRD had gas put in it (the first time it happened I put a couple of gallons in it before realizing it and filled it the rest of the way up with diesel. It actually ran for about 60 miles before acting up). Both times I drained the gas out by disconecting the fill hose to the tank and inserting a siphon line tube with a bulb hand pump. It was a PAIN IN THE ARSE to get the filler tube back on the tank fitting when done but it is doable. Both times the injectors were fine. In the incident referenced by Papaindigo, I didn't cut the lines and use a pump of any sort as Geordi suggested. I ended up removing the filter and rinsing it out with some fresh diesel. I used the hand pump on the fuel head to pump the majority of the fuel out of the lines after the tank was empty. I filled the filter up with a mix of diesel and diesel kleen in the silver container and re-installed the filter. After putting some diesel in the tank and re-priming it fired right up. It ran really rough for a few seconds but smoothed out and was fine. Hopefully the dealership won't chrage too much to drain the tank or try and talk you into doing something that doesn't need to be done to it.

Thanks for the replies. They have AAA so they got it towed to a close by diesel mechanic. He is going to drop tank, flush lines, change fuel filter, and check the injectors, hopefully not too expensive for the parents. If I made the mistake I probably would have tried to fix it myself but I am at work all day and really don't have the time this weekend. Starting to feel cautiously optimistic that the injectors will be okay.

Running on almost straight gas usually does not result in damage because it stops quickly. The bigger problem is a gas/diesel mix. It will run on this for extended periods, but combustion pressures and temps will be excessively high and cause serious damage.
