Last year in August when my timing belt was being done I decided to get the glow plugs installed and not have to worry about the ceramic ones breaking and taking out the engine.

2 weeks ago I got a code for glow plug 1 and 2 so I ordered to new ones. I thought ok maybe I got 2 bad plugs. But the jeep always started fine. Today we had the big snow storm out here so I decided to clean up the jeep and take her out for a ride. I got in to start her and she didn't want to. Cycle the plugs a few times and she fired up and ran really rough for 10 seconds. Checked the codes and now it showed another plug being out which is P1267.

So my question is: how in the hell did 3 steel plugs go bad in 5 months ?!?

I already have 2 new plugs really to go on but now I'm afraid to put them on.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

A bad ASD relay would fry them pretty quick, that's what destroyed my ceramics.

I now change out my ASD relay and it's brother every 12k miles, it's only about $20 and it's piece of mind for me.

Dumb question and I prolly should know the answer but I guess it's good that my jeep hasn't had the problem. What's the asd relay and it's brother u mentioned?

Great pictures! Thanks for the heads up about the relay. I put the technos in last March and so far haven't had an issue. But my headlamp relay acts dumb and sticks sometimes so I'm thinking these high quality Chrysler relays need to be replaced.

So are you saying, I am going to regret replacing my 112K ceramics that looked perfect with etecnos?

At least the CEL does not light up on my Sport. :|

I'll be picking up the relays today and hopefully work on the plugs this week when they come in. Right now the only good plug in the block is #3 which we all know is a pain to get to but I ordered all 4 just in case. I'm very surprised no one else had issues with this plugs besides me.

Never had any problems with the ceramics :banghead:

Those injectors look pretty caked up, I was wondering if using a PowerService or FPPF deluxe fuel treatment would help keeping injectors clean.

Just a reminder on those injector pictures. Anything on the outside and above the copper crush washer and "O" ring is goop associated with leaking fuel past the washer and "O" ring although I think the latter is mostly a dust seal probably due to the crow's foot that holds the injector in place being a bit loose. Below that point and internally is what happens due to combustion and fuel (dirty or not). Both diesel and gas injectors benefit from semi-regular use of injector cleaner in the fuel over and above the normal dealer fuel additives. On my gassers I usually notice a 10% drop in mpg, quite noticeable if you keep track, when it's time to add injector cleaner. If not I do it once a year but then I don't drive that much. Normal 12-15K mile a year drivers should probably do it like once every 3-4 months, more often if you drive more, less often if most all your driving is hwy.

Something to keep in mind for the metallic vs ceramic glow plugs.

The metallic glow plugs will heat up slower that the OEM ceramic glow plugs due to their metallurgical properties.
If the ECU thinks that it is still driving ceramic glow plugs and drives the appropriate voltage accordingly, the metallic glow plugs will now be much colder than than the ceramics would have been.

As a result, the cold start idle stability and/or if it even starts will be greatly impacted by this.

Yes, that's the drill when it's 20F or below. This is the only post I've ever read of problems with Etecno's.

So what would be a good factor by which to increase the glow plug duty cycle when converting from 7v ceramic to 7v metallic? I am thinking about having GDE do this now that I've tested the etecnos in subzero temps.

Without having a glow plug with thermocouple installed to check the temperature with, it's really hard to say how much you could safely increase the temperature.
THe best bet would be to use the OEM cal for the metallic glow plugs that were used both for 2007MY BUX vehicles plus the Nafta service fix and then go from there based on cold weather performance.

For the multiple key cycles, in fact for this you are accomplishing very little if anything.
The ECU calculates the amount of energy given to teh glow plug during the phase where the light is on. That maximum amount of energy won't be allowed again until you key off and the ECU calculates that the delivered energy has now dispersed. So if you key on, wait for light to go out, key on again immediately you're not delivering any more power to the glow plug and it won't warm up any appreciable amount above the first cycle.

My Etecno glow plug in the #4 position just went out yesterday, got code P0674. The plug measured open on an ohm-meter, but looked fine externally. They have only been installed about 6 weeks. I suspect this is due to cycling the key, which I have used since replacing the ceramics. With the GDE Ecotune, I can watch that on subsequent cycles of the key, the glow plugs are getting 7V again for a few seconds.

I replaced it with one of my original ceramics, which looks perfect with 120K on it.

Thankfully, it wasn't the #3 plug that burned out.
