So, changing the oil last week, I drained and replaced the filter, then went searching through all my crates for the new oil (I moved recently). I found 5.5 qts of my amsoil european car 5w40 and one of castrol full synthetic vw/mercedes formulation (which I got as an emergency bottle for my A4).

Well, castrol has the aluminum seal over the top and the amsoil doesn't, so as I was filling, I absent-mindedly poked a small hole in it and proceeded to fill. Well, a small portion of the foil (probably the size of a penny) fell in the fill tube. My heart sank a little, then I remembered that the fill goes into the sump ("dirty" side) and that I'm probably okay.

Has this happened to anyone else and did you do anything about it or ever notice any problems? I have a fumoto valve, so I'm not even sure it'll come out in a normal drain, but I don't know if it's worth fretting about.

Dan

Your filter will catch it and stop it from being pumped into the engine over and over again, no worries.

My concern would be a piece of foil that size would not make it to the filter, as it would not make it past the oil pickup tube/screen. It could block the flow of the screen if it makes it down there at all. I'd have taken the filler neck off to see if I could "fish" it out. That said, it will probably be ground smaller before heading to the pan, and then get past the screen, depending how small the particles are, then yes... the filter will do the rest. I don't think I'd worry about it.

Yes, the oil does go down to the dirty side of the filter in the pan... But the first place the oil touches is the top of the head in the lifter gallery area. Depending upon how large the piece of foil was, it may not even make it into one of the return passages to go down to the pan. If that's the case, then it will just be sitting on top of the head the next time you feel the need to disassemble the top of your engine.
